How do i tell if the grit it's worn out, when or if to add more, and can it be reused?
I have always wondered if i should be sifting the grit out of the slurry and trying to save it? I have an potting bench that flows to the garden area. I rinse my rocks off in that.
Any suggestions? Thanks

This only applies to the first/course stage: Rub some of the mud between your fingers. If you can feel grit, it needs to run longer. If it feels smooth, it's time for a cleanout or recharge.

grit is spent when it is gone or broken down into pieces so small as to be ineffective.
if i feel a bit (like noted above) I rinse a bit of the mud and recharge. But next time I completely clean.
theoretically you could take spent course grit and get something to use in a fine stage, but the issue is grading. Buying the grade you want is cheap. Using fine grit with bits of course mixed in is expensive in terms of damage.

Thanks for the replies. So basically i shouldn't concern myself with the very fine black power that appears out of the bottom of the slurry while rinsing. Fair enough

I agree with the touch test, but if black powder had settled out of my slurry rinse, I'd add a few days. Lots of variables. Letting it go as is will probably get you faster results, but adding a few days will get more grind per pound (though probably not much...). I have more patience than cash, so I try to wring every last bit out of my grit. Typically 2 weeks between cleanouts with 36 SiC in a QT 6 & mixed random rough.
