Ok, don't be too critical, it's not done yet and this is my first ever attempt at shaping stone. I'm really pleased with how it's coming along though. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]

I don't see anything to be critical about there Rose. I think it's coming along great. I'm trying to shape and polish stone myself, and I don't even have the 'kahonays' to post what I've got so far. I'm going to have to get a message to John. Good work!!
Keep on swimming, jusy keep on swimming, keep on swimming keep on swimming ;D

Hey Cher,
That looks great! Your are doing a very nice job with it ... you should have seen my first heart shape I cut ... it was aweful. My teacher at that time looked at it, shook his head and asked if I was feeling okay ... oh, how I miss that gentleman, he had a great sense of humor ;D
Keep us posted and let us know when it's done.

Cher, that is great...do you just hold it in your hand to work on it or do you put it in a vise? what type of rock is it? how big is it? are you going to tumble it after shaping?
interesting, verrrry interesting, KD

Yes, I just held it in my hand with a bowl of water close by. Kept dipping it in the water as I worked. I have it in the tumbler now (back in the coarse grit) but was thinking I should have drilled a hole first. I'm scared to though, afraid I'll break it. This was a nice piece of quartz I found that had this band of almost a dusty rose color running through it. I whacked it with a hammer and managed to get one piece to break off fairly flat. Had it in coarse grit for a couple of weeks but took it out and put it aside when I decided to get the dremel. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]

Hey Cher! great job! Is it hard to hold it in your hand? Are you worried about becoming a member of the "high four" club? What kind of stone is that? How long did it take you? Could I possibly ask more questions in one post? who knows?

Thanks Herm ;D
Not at all.
I was at first so I sat there for a few minutes just holding it with it running to see how it felt. I took an old rock that I didn't care about and played on that for a few minutes. It was so easy that I went right to this rock. This rock was kind of square, but it had a bump on one side. My first intention was just to smooth the bump off and fix one spot that had a little chip that was indented and didn't want to tumble out. The heart came after I had played awhile.
Mostly quartz, I'm not quite sure what the dusty pink is but it's hard. It doesn't show well in this pic but it's got some pretty neat swirls in it. Hope I didn't grind them all out.
All together, 1.5 hours to get to this point. I used a #40 grit diamond drill bit. Another 45 minutes last night before I tossed it in the tumbler.
Sure ;D
Ask a God, I'm not there yet and don't have any powers. LOL

Thats seriously comitted work done there for sure with a dremel.
What do you use to grip the rock with to stop the dremel pushing it away?

Thanks Andy. I didn't have anything to hold it with and didn't have any problem with it pushing away or anything, I just held it in my hand. I have a variable speed dremel and had it set on about 2 which worked perfect, even with the cheap drill bits. LOL It worked good at that speed so I didn't even try it any faster. Thanks Llana. Honest, it definitely is my very first attempt at doing anything like this at all. Definitely won't be my last, I'm already looking at rocks with a whole new look ... trying to see if I can see any particular shape to them. Cher,,, Great job!! Most people wouldn't show their first piece because they think it's not up to par. I think this is a big mistake on their part. Sharing what we "create" is half of the enjoyment we get. I think you did a great job,,,first attempt or not,,,, If someone doesn't think you have,,,,, Pfffffft to um!! Thanks,,, Tom

Tom, if I put up pics of some of my "creations", everybody would die from laughing. Then I would no longer have any rock tumbling friends. Ask BE! One day I drew a star and she nearly fell out of her chair laughing. I have no artistic ability when it comes to drawing and can turn out some pretty scary stuff! Hopefully, I will be better at cutting shapes with the saw than drawing! LOL!
In fact, think I will break out my new 4" tile saw and try my hand at cutting up some slabs I have.

Thank you everyone, sure gives me more encouragement to try something new. Art was my ace in the hole all through school, maybe some of that old talent will resurface. It's been a long time since I tried to do any creating with my hands, all my creations have been on the internet lately. This was so much fun, I think everyone should have a go at it. And I agree ... share what you do. You have to start somewhere and where's better than with people who understand what you are trying to do and the work involved. Thanks again!!
