EEEKKK... wouldn't breaking a laker be a sin for a rockhound to commit.

LOL She's no junior rockhound. She's full fledged and all I got to do was touch it and photograph it. She was hoping I could tumble it but that sucker would barely fit in my tumbler. Guess I need to get a bigger one eh? She's just going to hang on to it until I get a saw to slab it or bigger barrels. Least she let me drool over it for awhile. She said when she pulled it out of the ground she almost got sick she was so excited. I can't even imagine, I get nuts if I find one that's bigger than a quarter. thats really cool, i got some lake superior agates from berg's and the biggest one i got was about an inch and a half maybe. if you are going to tumble that, it will take a while in the rough stage, there are some deep pits.... good luck with it

also, so how do you find these? they're just in the ground around the lake or what? do you dig, or are they in the surf of the waves.....

Some are found along the shore of Lake Superior, others are found in various parts of Minnesota in gravel pits. You just have to know what your looking for. Finding one as large as she did today is not really common. I'm so jealous I feel sick myself. Hopefully Tuesday will be a good day for us, we're going agate hunting. Makes up for me not getting to go to the cities to meet Emerald. We just grab out water jugs and walk around looking, don't do a lot of digging. Both my son and daughter are like agate magnets. Wish I had their talent for spotting them. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]

Hello Cher,
If/when you do cut that bad boy in half ... please post a photo ... I bet it is gorgeous!
I have a couple of Lakers in my current batch of tumble mix ... it went into polish yesturday morning ... so, I'll most probably be taking them out on Thursday and see if they look as nice as I hope they are. When I pulled them out of the pre-polish, they already had a fairly nice shine on them ... so, I am hoping for a good batch this time.
Thanks for the photo .. that is a beauty!

I am currently tumbling some rocks that my nieces gave me. My parents taught me early to find pretty rocks and pick them up. Tami

wow...it must be their young eyes that make them agate magnets. My daughter's three and already a rockpickerupper..I hope she develops the same talent your kids have. I say it's their young eyes because, as I'm from farm country, I can tell you that when you're growing certified seed crops, it's necessary to walk through the fields and hand pick stuff that isn't perfect. It's called roguing. Who are the best at it? kids of course. Nothing beats those young eyes. Congrats.

Ah , Now I understand why my big boys find the stones long before I even start to spot them.
Great rock Cher. Thanks for the picture

OK, I am an idiot. I'm struggling to learn some rock ID and recently picked up rocks like mad. I think/hope some of them are agates and I am not sure.
Well, I should get to the point. I know that a photo's not the same as the real thing, but I don't get it. I get the size and I get that it's a rock, but I can't see a thing that would distinguish it from other rocks. How do you just KNOW that it is a Laker? I am so envious of the ability to do this.

There was one spot where some of the outer rough layer was worn down and you can see the lines there. Don't be envious *smile* if it hadn't been for that spot, we wouldn't have been sure of it. I have a couple others that I picked up that I "think" might be Lake Superior agates but I'll never know unless I whack them (don't want to do that). I'm planning to get one of those diamond blades for my dremel so I can cut a slice on one end. I think I'd be able to chip a small piece off with a chisel then so I could see inside. I really didn't know what I was looking for until I found my first laker.... after you find a few you just get the feel for it and they stick out...here is a link with some tips www.dayooper.com/AgateHunt.htm

Cher, thanks for smiling, I didn't want you to be insulted!
I can't wait to see what's in some of this rock I picked up, maybe that will help me know what I'm looking at.

Oh crap! I betcha that hotel is loaded with agates! I grabbed a bunch that looked semi-translucent, but I just saw the photo that Scooter linked to...and I KNOW I passed over alot of stone that looked JUST like that! It's really hard to tell what is what. That's for sure. Cher, You're gonna have to stop by the Clarion and see what I mean. You will probably find oodles of agates. The back parking lot is the least obvious location to look. The hotel parking lot wasn't crowded, so I just walked along with my coffee mug and tried to look innocent! I didn't want someone to think I was breaking into cars or something. *chuckles*

Hi I don't have 'tons' of laker agates, but I do have access to lots of good tumbling stuff. If you are interested, let me know. A local hospital parking lot has quite a good bit of rocks... let me know what color/size, etc you prefer.... just pay for the shipping...
