A brass hammer is needed to use on metal dapping blocks, and disc makers. Couldn't one of those orange dead blow hammers be just as safe and effective? I like the one pound variety.
I understand we're not to use a steel hammer to pound steel.
Brass hammers (1#) are about $25+. Orange dead blow hammers (1#) are about $11.
Anything else I need to know?
Thanks.

dead blow hammers do not hit as hard as a brass one. There is a usage for both. I had both when I worked on Helicopters, still have the brass but lost track of the dead blow one or rather I think the plastic all broke off. If I could only have one, I would go with the brass one. I do see one on ebay that is both a brass and a dead blow hammer. don't know how that would work.

I think the brass dead blow hammers are filled with shot or a stack of washers to get rid of the bounce. I have a brass hammer somewhere and they tell me I should use it with my stamps, but personally I'd rather let them mushroom and grind them back occasionally, the steel destroys the hammers if you use them a lot.
