Does the hardness of SiC vary from one manufacturer to another? I typically run my course cycles until the grit is broken down to powder. Lately I've been using SiC 80 that I bought here from arghvark and am noticing it takes longer to break down. An extra day in my 45C and several days longer in my 3 pounders compared to the 60/90 I get from the Rock Shed. I've been doing everything the same (stone types, mix of sizes, slurry thickness, etc.) as I've always done. The only variable I can think of is the SiC grit.

I can't answer the question, but I experienced the same thing based on the 10 lbs of 60/90 I started out with. It goes crazy fast in a 6lb barrel! I always just _assumed_ (yeah, we know what happens...) it was purely due to distribution of sizes, since SiC is ostensibly highly pure. I like the longer lasting, especially when doing obsidian (in 3lbers) because I just let it run, getting a good grind, since you pretty much have to do a cleanout any time you stop the barrel after the first day or so. I buy my grit from Abrasive Armory. Paul is easy to deal with, fair, has good prices, and I can pick up from him when I go to that area, saving shipping.

Green SiC is a small measure harder than black SiC.
What color is this material?

Hmmm...maybe I jumped the gun with this thread. The last batch in the 45C broke down right on schedule. Must have been some other variable that affected the earlier runs.
