So, the art display/sale I was invited to attend has turned into an arts/crafts fair. Huge difference around here between the two. It is still being advertised as an art show, but anything hand made is being allowed. Some artists are still coming, others are not.
Since many jewelry crafters here call dyed howlite Turquoise, they often get the sales over my genuine Turquoise. They often say my stuff is way overpriced to customers.
Many of the crafters feel their items are art. Crocheted rugs from bread bags, crocheted hooks on towels, potato cozies, quilted hot pads, stamped note cards, etc.
So, I am making some quick and easy costume jewelry to have there, in addition to cabochon jewelry and other rock related items . Most items I am making now are priced under $10.00.
No way of knowing who I will be next to, but since I am helping organize the event hope to be located towards the front of the building by an artist.
I will post some more of my craft quality creations, but if told not to, will not. Understand this is a lapidary arts board.
Thanks for reading.

Keep posting. I love to learn from what others are doing. I eventually hope to try my hand at selling some of my creations. Sounds like you are shifting gears perfectly. Sorry that you have to, tho.

My heart is in lapidary work. Just doing what is needed for the situation. Driving restrictions limit my ability to sell at shows.

Art vs craft is a slippery slope. Talk to 2d artists about how they feel about jewelry at art shows, ya might get an ear-full. Lots of high horses in the art vs craft argument. Just be glad there's a show to do. Don't compete with lower priced sellers; ya both lose. Educate, inform. Explain why yours cost more. Add value and perception of value.

Everything I sell contains a business card size tag or 1/2 size for earrings. On the back is the materials used and price. If it is turquoise color dyed howlite, that is stated. Sterling silver vs silver plated. Reconstituted stone, vs real stone. I always explain the differences to customers. So, my low end stuff for this show will be accurately represented. I am also s 2 d artist, painting, drawing and photography. Not to mention my literary works. I know this battle all too well. Have had many ask why I am doing lower end craft style things when I also do other arts. It is about what I like to do and what sells. Trying to look at this as a way to enjoy what I do and make a little money.

Love it. Actually my daughter and I are making some trifold display boards from pegboard. Each will be labeled. Tentative names are Bargain Haloween. Bargain Critters. Bargain Child. Everything on these boards will be under $10.00. There will be some boards with more expensive items. Instead of Bargain items, we might just use the dollar menu idea. Thanks.

I've never done a crafts show. I've attended lapidary and crystal shows of varying sizes. I did a sportscard show with my son years ago. I think I have a sense of what goes on. I believe they are a good place to network and gain future customers. Customers might not buy your best from you today but seeing craftmanship in person is better than looking at pictures. At one show I got a business card from someone selling slabs. He became a source and contact for future purchases.
