Some calcite crystals I found last year in central Oregon. Not sure if I shared them or not, so here they are.

I cleaned them with vinegar and etched them to much. found then at the bottom of a piece of petrified wood stump.

A shame about the etching but I don't know of another way to clean them well. I suppose that you left them in the vinegar too long. About how much vinegar did you use and how long did you let it soak? I have used vinegar on my Calcite clams in small doses and it didn't seem to do much. I did let some soak overnight and it etched the crystals like I see in your photo.

I have never found a good way to clean any sort of mineral coating on Calcite. Any thing that removes the mineral will etch the Calcite.
Along the same vein, it is a bit annoying when you see Calcite that's been "finished" with Muratic being sold as natural. That slick, almost greasy/waxy feel is easy to spot. I have sold a few Terlingua specimens that I had clearly marked as Muratic washed.

I have never found a good way to clean any sort of mineral coating on Calcite. Any thing that removes the mineral will etch the Calcite. Too true. The coating is often caliche, which of course is cemented together by calcium, or some other calcium-bearing mineral. Hot water might work if the coating isn't too stuck to the crystal surfaces, but who has the patience?

Nice piece.......It does take awhile to clean... I have one cleaned and working on another (Oregon found).. I like the ones I find in central Montana, they shine on their own.. As any mineral, rock and (or) fossil, they are fun to work with.... Thumbs up....As said, you scored a beauty Woodman!
