I think those top two might be pitch. Not a 100% on that but we find a lot of stuff like that here in up state NY. It's really light and always dull black. We cut it once and it didn't really look like it was plant cells. But if you find it isn` t pitch please post what you find it is. I haven't been keeping it when I find it

You will smell the pine.

Took it out and put a lighter to it. Got hot really fast, but no pine smell. Didnt have much of a smell at all. Took a knife to it and got surface scratches, took quartz to it and got surface scratches Threw it back in

I would say black pet wood with an inclusion of pitch. Not Montana. Did Walt say where it came from? That could help a lot.

Wouldn't pitch have all but disappeared after three weeks in a tumbler with agates and other? It is hard. From what I read if it was pitch, I'd say it would be all gone by now. 3 weeks has barely touched it with the exception of the outer layer being almost gone.

I was thinking tar pitch that had dried up. My wife was the one that told me that. Seemed right to me as it was really light and always seems to have those holes in it that seemed like a burst bubble. Not like road pitch though. More like really old natural tar pitch

More like really old natural tar pitch I'm pretty sure it's a Montana. The "rind" was right for it and I found another one almost just like it in the box

It should turn out nice. However, what are the chances it's a laker like Fossilman asked? I've had some Montanas, but I don't really recall any banding in any of them. I have, however, ended up with some very dark lakers with faint banding. Just wondering, as I'm no ID expert by any stretch.

They have a smell that I recognize (reminds me of home) But I'm not sure it's a Montana either Walt sent it and it was in a box with all kinds of stuff so that doesnt help narrow it down.

Maybe when you tumble it down further to remove the rind, more banding or a center will emerge. Should be interesting.
