Sorry, its not a Montana moss agate, but could be a Montana agate...Could also be an agate from the same area as the Laker came from..

Not much has changed with it since last time I'll let it go for another week. Notice the faces? Last week I threw in some common opal that I had collected. I like how its turning out I was looking through a bag that my dad sent me from his friend that passed away and found this blue one ?

So my wife and I are in WV this weekend and we went to a rock shop. The guy that ran the shop collected all over the east coast including NY. I showed it to him to see if he could identify it. He didn't remember running in to it in NY so he didn't have first hand with it. His first guess from the photos was a type of coal named jet. I guess it's something found on the outside of a coal vein. After he saw your new photos he thought some type of agate. I found one small one in NY before we headed down here, and he gave me some things to try with it. He told me to try cutting it to look at a cross section. Also to smash it to see the cleavage. I only have a small piece of it so I'm going to have to find more I WILL post a picture of it when I get back home as well. It looks like the same stuff to me but maybe you guys will see it differently. I am terrible at IDing and think a lot of things looked the same.

Looking forward to seeing it I'm pretty convinced it's a agate of some sort

Here is the small one I had. I will have to look for a larger one the next time I walk the stream.

No, was your translucent right from the start? Ya, the ones I find around here are pretty opaque. Must be different stuff. Basalt does look right for what I find. Some of the images from Google with the burst air pockets looks right.
Could your be obsidean?

Once I got the skin off it was. Obsidian would of been long gone by now in there. I took it out this morning and not much as changes. I'll move it on next week I think.

It should turn out nice. However, what are the chances it's a laker like Fossilman asked? I've had some Montanas, but I don't really recall any banding in any of them. I have, however, ended up with some very dark lakers with faint banding. Just wondering, as I'm no ID expert by any stretch. A lot of MTs have banding. I have found lots of them. I even found a couple Fairburns in MT at 7 Sisters. MT will surprise you any time you think you know what is going on.

I don't see anything excludes pet wood. Much of it is carbon black. I call that material "midnight wood". Ask Garage Rocker maybe he can help us
