You got the coolest plants Jean! Any stinky stapelia flowers opening yet? Thanks, Brian. Funny that you should ask about the stapelia, Brian. I have one plant out in the front yard that has a couple flowers in the process of opening. Maybe in another day or two. Our first stinky star of the season

beefjello -
Just now getting around to posting the pics, but I've got you beat by a couple days, Brian.
I didn't even see the buds until August 27, when they looked like this:
First one opened 9/2/18
Second one opened on 9/4. Remnants of first one shriveled on the right.
The flies just love the stinkiness!
Those were the only two I've had this year . Guess they didn't get enough water...

Another pic of the plant for ID - Photo taken 10/6/17 on prospecting trip to the Mojave.
The area it was found, the sandy area. Saw maybe half a dozen of them.
Still looking at ID sites
I didn't give up, I kept looking. Stubborn? Tenacious? You bet! I ran across a photo in a database that looked similar. I checked with my new friend at calscape.org (California Native Plant Society), and while I was close, he nailed it down for me! We looked through a lot of databases, the flowers on this plant are extremely variable.
It is a Phlox Heliotrope, aka Fragrant Heliotrope, Heliotropium convolvulaceum. It is in the Boraginaceae (Borage Family) and as are the morning glories. Woo-hoo! It's range includes the 29 Palms area.
Link to photo range and other info. It was found in the yellow area to the east of 29 Palms. So glad to be able to put a name to it!
Thanks to everyone that was looking for me!

Awesome.......your tenacity comes as no surprise to this follower...!........great find..!
Evidently, the Morning Glory Heliotrope is also a native of Barstow, CA..........calscape.org maps provide a good search.......not so much the calflora.org location suitability maps.
Curious, it's considered an herb......is that due to fragrance or medicinal application........like peyote.......lol....

Thanks, Joe. I don't know if it has medicinal value is not. Maybe. I think they call it an herb because it had a woody stem? Not sure on that...
Now I have more research to do, see if morning glories have a medicinal purpose.
(It never ends, lol)

No, it was already named, so not even remotely named after me, lol. But my contact at CNPS asked if he could put my photo in their database. I told him to go right ahead!

ETA Re., plant IDs - Still have some more work to do. Someone else misidentified several of the plants in beefjello 's AZ thread. Got some fixin' to do...

That's wonderful!
I salute you and to anybody who can name all those plants from the top of their head, and can name dog vomit as well!

That's wonderful! I salute you and to anybody who can name all those plants from the top of their head, and can name dog vomit as well! Thanks, Pat. But that is not a fair assessment. I DON'T know them all off the top of my head. Some plants, yes.
I know how to research, and also have my contacts!
