Hello again. I think I got these reduced enough for a better post. Helen (Emerald) came up this way today and we had the best time! I took her to 2 different places, one I had never been to before, and she brought the luck with her. Found better stuff today than ever before. The first place we went to required a lot of water wading, and let me tell you, that water is COLD We lost the feeling in our toes after a while so it didn't really matter. Here's the view. We didn't risk taking that OMG incredible camera she had to the next spot, we had to climb down a steep slope, but we found tons of stuff there. The river had been way up and there was a dry area with great quartz washed up on it. No freezing tootsies there! We didn't want to leave. Here's our hauls. Helen: Me: Llana, you wanted to see me dirty, there ya go Helen was wearing "cargo pants" with pockets all over. That's the way to go. And a wonderful time was had by all ;D cookie

happy, happy rock wimmen, fresh from the hootch......
i saw on CNN you had to be a bit cautious about that water because of all the flooding and possible contaminants, but y'all look like you had a great time....thanks for the pics! those rocks look like they need a saw......

KD, those rocks definatley need a saw. Helen has ordered one and it's on the way. Funny, though, I prefered the bigger rocks and she liked the tumbling size, and she's getting the saw! I'm going to try to score the rock to break where I want it to and whack away. But I'm sure better results can come from slabbing. Most of the contamination happened up river from us, so I think it'll be OK. The first place we went was right at the headwaters, the very birth of the river. The second place had some standing water that was kinda stinky so we avoided that. The river was running fast and I almost lost it a couple of times. Helen couldn't take the cold water for too long (who could blame her) so she didn't have a problem. I just noticed in the last pic my feet are still purple. COLD water!

Wow, I've been out rocking right here in St.L. for exactly the opposite reason; we've had no rain for so long the rivers are way way down and there are huge exposed gravel beds to walk out on. I wish we could compare our river rock cause I think they look a lot alike. What do you think you've got there? Could you possibly post a close-up? Thanks! Oh BTW I didn't have to get my feet wet! Maybe you guys should come up here.

Puppies, Helen has the camera and her load, maybe she could do it for you. We stayed out there so late she had to download the pics and scoot back home. The second place we went was like that. the river had come way out of the banks and deposited alot of good stuff before receeding. I'll go there if you come here cookie

Hi All! Yep...it was fun....and cold! I forgot to bring spare shoes, so I was wading around just in socks!
Honestly, I'm not sure what we got.
We were looking for rutilated quartz. My saw should be here next week and if I'm lucky, I might have a few pieces out of the rock I picked up. Cookie found a hunk of strawberry quartz for me and as usual in Georgia, we found plenty of quartz. (Some smokey....some semi-clear embedded in milky quartz.) I'm hoping those are rutilated. If not, no worries. I had a great time and would do it again in a heartbeat!

Puppies, I'll post a pic sometime this weekend with a few close-ups of the rock we got.
Cookies found some beautiful stuff...wish we had more time to take more pictures. The day flew by....and I had to head out of the area before dark! I took backroads all the way to her place...so it was a bit confusing. I arrived home just after sunset. I was worried I'd get lost around Gainesville (MapQuest gave me screwy directions) Thankfully, I didn't get lost! *cheers*

I forgot to tell you all something funny!
Whenever Cookie sat down, I suggested she look under her bottom when she got up. It never fails that when you sit down to scan an area, you're sitting on the best piece! It happened to me several times and to Cookie too! I think I'm becoming superstitious!

Heck of a haul, girls! Just send me all four bins of those cool rocks and I'll be happy! I'll cut 'em for you, but I won't promise to return them! LOL!
Where did ya'll get those neat baskets with the handles?
Looks like ya'll had just too much fun. Not only did you get a great batch of rocks, but the scenery surrounding you is beautiful. What a great way to spend the day.
I am upset that we see no pictures of you gals in those beautiful, fashionable waders. And you both look way too clean! Apparently Emerald's cargo pants did not have an elastizied waist band, or she would have been rockhounding with her pants down around her knees! Bet those pockets were bulging!

Got the baskets at Target. Think they were around $8 each. Though, with hauling a heavy load of rock, the handle bends and pops out!
It's good for carrying smaller rock loads....we gave up with the handles when they were getting full!
When the basket got too heavy to carry, I'd just fill up my pants pockets! I just about lost my britches more than once...especially when the pockets were getting full!
Oh, we decided to forgo the waders this time...I think cause we were anxious to get to hunt for rock!

Well there you are, Cookies toes are purple and I am totally green with envy. Looks gorgeous down there and boy would I like to visit. Cookie, we'd have to just take tents and spend the night cause I'd never want to leave. My hubby says if we ever went camping it would be like that old Lucy and Desi movie where they lost the camper when she filled it up with rocks.
I sure like the idea of those pants with all the pockets, sounds like those are ideal for rockhounding. Going to have to see if I can find me a pair of them somewhere. Glad y'all had fun!!

And it's so great to put face to names...and cold hands to names ...and purple feet to names! ;D You two look like you had a blast. I'd go looking in the Charles but I think I'd find Jimmy Hoffa before I found any interesting rocks. EW ...But I'm glad you two had a good time...when you get them whacked or sawed or whatever, remember to show us!

What a nice spot to go rockhunting. The fotos show the result. WTG Now the hard task of cutting and tumbling and then more fotos to show the results.
It was well worth the odd cold toe .

I really wanted to come home and whack some rocks, but suddenly it's dark when I get off. What happened Of the 2 best pieces I found, I was sitting on one ( a big, clear piece of quartz) and in the road near where we parked the truck (Another big piece with smokey quartz sticking out of it.). Did get some very promising stuff. Those rubies in the tumbler are about to be evicted.I've got better fish to fry! At one point I heard Helen laghing and asked her what was so funny. ( we were in the dry area then) She said she'd run out of spit and didn't want to waste the rest of her coffee on the rock. The more she tried to spit, the funnier it got. I offered to pee on them, but for some reason she didn't think that was a good idea. cookie

Emerald and Cookie - those are great pics. Looks like an eventful day all round with a good haul of bounty! Great stuff! Get some waders next time you go out! I use them for river fishing and they make all the diff. Looking forward to see the shining articles once tumbled/shaped/sawn/slabbed etc... Thanks very much for the pics and sharing that with us. Andy.
