Hey Cookie and Helen, the leaves here are pretty much all red, gold, yellow, orange and brown. Seems that summer is almost over for me.

Fall is coming soon to where Cookie lives. Around our house, (I'm further southeast at a lower elevation) the leaves seem to change noticeably around halloween.

Thanks Andy, I appreciate your appreciation... Did I say that right? Next week the weather will turn cooler here and the trees will be on fire. You just can't belive the beauty of it. People take tours in this area just to view the leaves changing. I love it here. MR, I miss summer, but, since I moved here, I do love fall and winter. In TX, I saw snow 2 times in 40 years. Here, about twice a winter, snow falls and life stands still in awe of it. In other words, we can't drive in snowy weather and it's a pleasant day off. cookie

I went rocking too! I had to pick up the puppies at the groomer's and figured out that I knew good ways to go south from there and have a little "detour" to a rock site I read about in the Rock Trails book. So off I went and I actually zeroed right in on the site which was pretty far out in the country. So here on this creek I was seeing our usual river rock, only better. My problem is that I could pick up everything. Much of the rock has that waxy surface and/or banding so you know it's "something." Then there are those dull rough potato looking rocks that may or may not have much interesting color on the surface...well, that might be concealing a laker! Well, since this was an "impulse trip," as it were, I didn't have anything but a couple of plastic grocery bags in the car to put them in. I picked up stuff and more stuff and some pretty big rocks. Went to pick up my bag, lifted it up to ground level and hopped up there -- where my bag was broken. Walked across to the car and got the other bag, picked up all the rock, crossed the street and had that one break while I was trying to open the hatch. The pups were fascinated while I picked them all up again. Anyhoo, this may be my best yet haul of local rock. A lot of it looks like flint I think, it is very patterned with some pretty dramatic colors in some cases. Some of it looks like Missouri Blue Lace, which I think I've picked up before. All this was accomplished with a half hour drive, and it was rush hour -- not bad! Has anybody else used rockhunting guide books?

Puppie, The book I have is fairly useless. It mostly shows places you can find on the internet pretty easily.
The rest of the book shows where the mineral museums are! Don't have it in front of me...not sure of the author, but I was very disappointed.
Ahh Puppie...lately, I've been trying to keep a few empty plastic bins in the trunk of the car....just in case I find an opportunity to hunt rock! ;D

Yeah, I know what you mean about equipping the car. I was thinking about that today. I've got this promotional cutesy type backpack thingie made of nylon, perfect for picking up rocks in, while looking relatively normal to possibly objecting or curious other persons. The thing is after I pick up rocks with it I hose it out for obvious reasons and leave it out to dry and forget to put it in the car. I forgot to mention that while the pups were watching me load all this rock into the car piece by piece, it started to rain. So Cookie, if you are still reading this thread, I had to get wet too!

I like the pictures, fun, fun, fun! Great that you had such a nice time and shared it with us! I once was trying to pick plants (for my aquarium) from a river and felt my hands very slimy while doing it, I look to my hands and upon close inspection I saw tiny white worms! At first I thought they were some type of leaches but later I learned that they were planarias. I guess you don't find them in all rivers. I have to try rivers or lakes again to see what kind of rocks I could find. Great pictures thanks, I enjoyed them!
