Caveat: I have not read in detail all the excellent obsidian tips. Lazy? Probably. I've been running exclusively obsidian rough in one of my 3lb Lortone barrels. Typically about 2 weeks with 4 tbsp of 80 grit. Not checking after about the first day or so due to obsidian "concrete". A variety of sizes, perhaps not enough smalls. No ceramic or other media. (Just haven't gotten around to getting any.) Been dissatisfied with the progress. Typically after 2 weeks, I'd have 3-10 pieces ready to move on. The obsidian I'm tumbling is smallish nodules with a pretty rough rind, lots of pits. Last batch, threw in a handful of small-to-tiny agate nodules that are EXTREMELY prevalent at one of the sites I regularly go to. Night-day difference. Most of the obsidian was really nicely shaped, and there were only about 10 pieces that were _not_ ready to move on. Here's the cool part: The barrel sat for at least 5 minutes between the time I removed it from the tumbler and the time I opened it. NO glass concrete. None. I'm sure the smalls helped the grind a lot, but I'm conjecturing that mixing in that small amount of agate residue prevents the concrete from forming, which will allow regular slurry and status checks. Edit: Started a confirmation barrel this morning. Pretty stoked. obsidian epiphany: Generated from my Samsung GALAXY S5 using tools.rackonly.com

By George, I do believe you've got it! Excellent shine on those puppies! These are wet, just out of first stage. Now the hard work begins. But it's encouraging.
