After you have determined how much wire you need to encase the cab is there a rule of thumb that you use for the wire needed to create the bail?

I add 3" to the circumference of the cab for bails/twirlies. That gives 1.5" on each side. It works with my style of wrapping. Depends on your style. I try for minimal waste since I work with Argentium. Make your first wraps with cheap plated wire & experiment. Lynn

Thanks zarguy thats the kind of input I'm looking for but it's for a project I have in mind and not for my venture into wrapping. I guess what I'm really wanting to find out is what the maximum amount of wire used for say the largest cab one would normally wrap for instance would it be like 6", 10" or what for the cab. I sort of stated it wrong in the OP. I know some of you make some pretty big uns.

Plus an outside wire of about 4" and maybe 8" of binding wire.

I think the largest cab I ever wrapped I used 9" long wires so I would have enough to make a bail that was large enough to even out the cab. If I remember correctly, I had to trim those wires a bit at the end so that was probably overkill, but I'd rather trim a little bit than be too short.

Okay this is good now that you have your pieces cut too length and layed out for the binding process do you use something like painters tape, wire, a third hand to hold the pieces together for binding? Do you use wire from a spool or do you use the loose coils?

measure the circumference of the cab. take that measurement in inches, add 2 inches and then multiply by 2. The result is the length of wire to cut for the frame wires. Sometimes it gives you a little more than what you need, but it's better to have some extra than not enough. This is the formula I use for all of my wire wraps.

Do you use wire from a spool or do you use the loose coils? I use painter's tape to bind the ends of the frame wires together so they are easier to work with. I order wire on spools and cut the wire to length from the spool. spool vs coil is personal preference. large quantities of wire are easier to manage on a spool imo.

I tend to err on more than less. If I overestimate, the excess wore can always be used for bails on other projects. Would rather estimate too much than too little. Been there, done that, no fun.

I use 10mm tape from Tamiya- a Japanese model company. DH gets it for me. I tape the ends together to mark the middle. I don't use spooled wire. I use coils- easier for me to manage.

Okay so now that the bindings are done and you are ready to make the basket/bezel/cradle/ whatever do you use any sort of technique to hold the slick stone while forming the basket from experience I know this can be problematic. Let me reiterate I am not asking because I don't know the basics of wrapping but am going to use this info in an upcoming project of mine and every one has some special technique they use.

If I need anything, I use tape.

My method takes a 4.5" circumference adds 3" for a length of 7.5". Your method takes 4.5" adds 2" and doubles it to 13". 5.5" longer than mine. Where does all that extra wire go? Lynn
