Here is some picture of some of the stuff I found at the quarry: I found lots of other stuff, to much to take pics of it all, but here is some nicer stuff. Here is a close up picture of some of the limestone, there is alot of leaf impressions and some small animals (bees etc) in them, but my camera didnt get close enough to reall be able to see them good. The next 3 pictures are of the same rock, it looks so neat: Bunny ps: oh oh more pictures in a nother thread check them out of the amyethest!

I love the waxy appearance of the first stones. If they look that nice rough, the finished product will be outstanding. The coin youre using, wouls that be about equal to a US quarter in size?

Another rock ID question -- how can you tell it's travertine as opposed to agate or jasper? I've collected quite a bit of similar looking stuff, never thought it was travertine, but maybe it is. Thanks!

Cookie - yes it is equal size to US quarter, just not the same value, hahha
Puppy - to be honest not 100% sure it is travertine, but Cindy has hunted for jasper alot so we knew it wasn't that, the area we went to is known for travertine and lime stone....the limestone was easy to pick out. Between all the people that were there, it was the first trip for travertine for us all. but between few pictures some of us had seen and the descriptions we had we are quite sure this is travertine.

I am hoping to go back there this weekend, my kids really want to go, so we might go there and camp out for a night and collect for a few days.
I really need to stock up for the winter ;D
It is really nice stuff, especially outside in the sun.

On any of the glassier finds, if they don't come clean by rinsing with a hose and still have any red dirty areas, you might want to consider soaking them in oxalic acid. It'll remove iron deposits. I think there's a store bought product called Iron-Out that some people use as well.
I've used it on several rocks that I wanted to tumble. I have alot of red clay here...washed and washed and washed and it wouldn't remove the red. Then, put it in oxalic acid for a few days and it was gone! Nice yellow rock with redish stripes in it. Amazing stuff...acid!
Sounds like fun this weekend Bunny. Matt and I are going back to Ivey Farm this weekend. We're going to dig and have a cookout with our new rockhunting friends there! Should be fun! We may do it both Saturday and Sunday! But because of the animals, we'll have to drive home and drive back! (12 hrs of driving in 2 days! yuk!)
