I've split many tons of rock up to 2 feet thick with wedges and a 2 pound hammer. But I used a 7" circular saw to cut notches for the wedges rather than a drilling round holes.
The oldtimers around here quarried sandstone in the winter (when the hammer and wedge method doesn't work well) by drilling holes, filling them with water and letting them freeze overnight.
The hammer and wedge method doesn't work for rocks that fracture conchoidally.
