I had this really sweet slabbette of translucent rhodochrosite that was too thick and nice to waste on one or two cabs so I decided to cut in half through the middle. I mentioned this to stardiamond in another post. Well, I got out the ameritool trim saw with a thin blade and got up the nerve. The blade bends if you are not real careful! Thank goodness for the variable speed and softness of rhodochrosite. First, I laid a sharpie on the table and marked a line. It wasn't dead center, but I knew to cut on one side of the line. I made the cut half blind. Water was spraying in my face because I had to lift the guard. The slabbette was the exact height of the blade. It started out 12.83mm almost all the way around and now I have to that are about 6mm. I know it isn't much for a lot of you cutters, but I was pretty stoked! Yay! (the gray marks are the slabs are dirt)

Good job!
Too bad they don't make something like the Deli uses to slab meat and cheese.

Good job, Tela! I'm the worst sawer in the world. I make my husband do those types of cuts for me. He's way better at it.

Looks like you did a real good job, but I would have glued it to a piece I had just cut that was still in the vice.

I can do a lot with a 7", but bigger is better. I can't go too big, though. My neighbors are really close.

DOH! woodman, I didn't think about it at first, but I could have glued it to a smaller piece to put into the little vice and let the rhodo protrude from it. Took me awhile, but I got there. LOL!

Does a 10" saw REALLY make much more noise than a 7" saw...

I was thinking of the really big ones. I think I can get away with a 10".

Now you are thinking! you glue it to a piece that you have in the vise that you just cut, clue it on and the next cut will be parallel to the first cut, thin cardboard and superglue. use acetone to clean the fresh cut. give it try with some junk material first to see how it works.

I get ugly deep saw marks when I try hand cutting, Elizabeth usually does a much better job. I get the saw envy, I only have 6 slab saws 10 inches and over... ;p My 6 inch trim saw is louder than all but one of the slab saws.
