My daughter, grandson and I went out today to our favorite old gravelpit. Found a few agates and lots of jasper. Red Jasper, some with hematite bands. I think this is yellow jasper, some of it also mixed with hematite. A few agates, not the best but we're going out to another area tomorrow. Then the most awesome chunk of all ... and it is a chunk! My grandson found this for me, didn't weigh it yet but it's heavy. He was so proud of himself, dug it out with his little multi-tool. Also got a surprise from my Mom, a box of Montana rocks, but I'll put them in another thread. Thanks for looking. Cher

I got 3 other really nice big pieces but was just too tired to take anymore pics. I also found this one, no idea at all what it is and I'm having total fits trying to photograph it, the color just won't show. I managed to get this pic which shows the transparency of it and also some of the wavy lines. The rock is actually like dark green glass, very very shiny and has lighter green areas that show the wavy lines. Also has what almost looks like the stuff that give moss agates the mossy affect. (Sorry, don't know what that's called.) I'm hoping tomorrow that I can get a pic outside that will show the colors. Cher

I'm pretty sure it's jasper-hematite mix. There's definitely some hematite in there but that sucker is so big I don't know if I can even break it. Need a bigger sledge hammer.

This is wild. The stuff I pick up locally looks exactly like that. Not the green stone, I don't think I've picked up transparent green and I can't wait to see a better picture of it. Were the rocks wet or dry in the photos?

I wipe them down with a damp paper towel so they'd show the color better, although some of the red looks pretty good without it. I think my next tumble is going to be some of the red stuff. I have enough now to do about 10 barrels of it. Wish I had as many agates. LOL

PS. That green stone was almost completely buried. The sun was just at the right angle that I saw the shine so had to dig it out. It's most definitely a "wait until I get a saw" stone.

Oh Cher! Very nice finds! The red jasper is cool looking! Can't wait to see it polished. Love the agates as always! ;D

Hey Cher! those are great. I'm interested to know if the hematite will bleed during tumbling and affect the color of the rest of the stone...especially the yellowy one. Have you done anything like this yet? What was the effect? Cool stones. Are they heavy too?

Haven't yet but I just got through emptying out my coarse barrel and putting in some of the red and yellow. There's also a few pieces in there that have some hematite banding so we'll see.

Is the red jasper what you sent me a little of? I'm tumbling some with the local quartz now. Think it will go into 600 tommorrow. Funny, the hematite I've done dosen't do that "red" thing, but I can't get it to polish either. So heavy but so soft. Do I need to do a batch of just hematite?

I couldn't stand it last night. I emptied out the stuff in my coarse barrel and filled it with red/yellow jasper, some of it is banded with hematite.
I do have a piece of hematite that got into the last batch I was doing, didn't see any signs of red at all, but then it wasn't a very big piece. I'll give this new stuff a couple days then take a look and see if there's any hint of red in there.
