That's beautiful! How do you cook the oil off? On small stuff like this I have a toaster oven, for larger slabs I have a kitchen oven.

It may very well wash off surface oil but not the oil in cracks, any oil will prevent a good polish. also you want to get rid of any oil on the outside of the egg. You don't want oily hands when working on the bull wheel.

Interesting. I've never heard of cooking the oil off. I've always used kitty litter followed by soaking in soapy water or acetone. I try to avoid heating because I've always been told you don't want to do that to agates, especially if they already have fractures, and to avoid color changes. You don't have a problem with either one of those?
Nice egg. Love the red moss.

I cooked the egg in this post with no problems. I have had color shift with some petwood and a few eggs but have not done anything other than a bunch of brazilians, I keep the temp about 300 degrees. I use kitty litter and degreaser also but find the cooking is faster. ideally i like soaking in degreaser then cooking. What everworks is the best way, all I really know is that I want all oil gone before sanding or polishing.

I see. At what temp do color shifting and breaking generally become a problem?

I see. At what temp do color shifting and breaking generally become a problem? Different material react differently, so a set temp is not good for all but I try to use the lowest temp that will cook the oil out, the more oil you can get out prior to cooking the better. the only cracking i have had with agate was caused by thermal shock when i took a piece of hubbard basin out of the oven too soon. i should have let it cool down slowly.
