Last night and this morning brings a storm with very high north winds and beach flooding warnings that are posted along Lake Superior's south shore.......wife and I are leaving in an hour to be there when the winds die down and new rocks will be exposed. Going to try our luck at night for the new "Yooperlite" and agates during the day. Will post pictures when I return......no cell service or internet for 4 days !!!

Returned late last night, absolutely exhausted. Started Friday at 10 am to the Mackinaw bridge, winds increased as we heading north. By 1:30 pm the bridge was closed to high profile vehicles and trailers. When we arrived at the bridge, it was down to passenger cars and empty pick-ups. Had to pull off and move everything into the cab of the truck to go over. I will say it was the longest 5 miles I have ever drove across that bridge, 70 mph gusts ....155 feet in the air over 900 feet of water...no worries. I need to add...the bridge deck is not solid, it has the outside lanes each direction that are cement, the center lane is grating that allows the wind to come up from below your vehicle. It relieves the pressure in high winds. So you basically are getting gusts from every angle. The grate is between me and the trailer on the return trip, we didn't take pictures in the gale crossing.

Couple more hours to get to Superior where we stay....home sweet...dark home...the storm has knocked out power by the time we arrived. So, we went to the beach. Lake Superior was angry. My wive being brave with her back to the waves....We are both in stocking foot waders and rain suits and are pretty much warm.

If you have never been to Lake Superior.....the sheer volume of stone to look through is mind boggling.

The above picture shows where the surf reached overnight, everything in front of her is newly turned over. The shoreline trees look barren due to a forest fire 6 years ago called The Duck Lake Burn.

Then, we went night hawking Saturday night after a full day of hunting agate.....this time for Syenite/Sodalite (Yooperlite) In 2 hours we had our 25 lbs. It is crazy bright when the black light hits it on the beach, like someone threw down a neon bulb. Lots of other folks had the same idea and the beach was a strange black light wilderness rave. We had gone down around 4 miles and made our way back in the dark, giggling every time one would light up. Those was taken later and shows some of them......going to get some new pictures and video later of Syenite/Sodalite and sort down our other rock that aren't even unpacked yet. More to come.

Awesome trip report! That must have been a hell of a trip across the bridge. I find it a bit odd that they made you empty your truck bed - in my mind that destabilizes the truck. More weight distributed over the rear axle and less of an open box for wind to whip around in increases traction and improves aerodynamics I think. I'm sure they know what they're doing though. Man I would have been acting like a kid in a candy store with all those newly exposed rocks Looking forward to more pictures.

They don't want anything sucked out of the bed by the gusts and have it sitting on the bridge. The bridge crew cannot get out of the truck when the winds are that high to clear something that may be on the deck.......a cooler laying there can close the bridge completely. We always top the tank of my truck for the weight over the rear axle. It's just something we have to live with here, want to go to the U.P, cross the bridge.......unless you want to drive around Lake Michigan up through Wisconsin.

And the wrath of November came early. My inlaws lived in Washburn on the South Shore. I have been over that bridge many times. Kinda scary at times. Never had to experience 70MPH winds, only about 40 MPH.
Glad you had a good trip in other respects. Can't wait to see the rest of your finds.
