I would love to see pictures of your most favorite rock out of your collection and hear why it's your favorite. Sweetiehound

My favorite rock is this fossil which was hard to get up the steep slope and also hard to get fitted in the saw. Jack

I don't have a pic of my favorite rock...in truth it's a very ordinary round (probably granite) beach rock from the shores of Lake Ontario. But it comes with a story. When I turned 30 I was living in Toronto and it had to be the lowest point in my life. I was out of work, living hand to mouth with a former boyfriend (oh THERE'S a good idea) in a place where I didn't know anyone and where no one seemed to anxious to know me. My birthday came and...nothing... so I did what all newly minted 30o year old single broke women should do...I went shoppinig. well...I had no money so I can't really call it shopping. And I was wandering around the Danforth in Toronto and thought "hey...it's my BIRTHDAY!" ...I need to do something." So I went into a coffee shop and went up to the clerk and said "HI! it's my 3oth birthday and I'm here for my free gift!". Really I didn't expect much except for someone...anyone to wish me a happy birthday. And the clerk laughed and gave me one of the those teeny taster cups of coffee! Best coffee I ever had. So I went to a card store..."HI! It's my birthday and I'm here for my free gift!" and I got a BOW! a free BOW! And finally I wandered next door to one of those rock mineral stores...same story..and the woman laughed and reached down behind the counter and gave me this rock she had picked up the day before. I still have the rock AND the bow and a really lovely memory of my birthday that year. Okay...so...yeah...really it was begging if you think about it. But those people rescued me in a way. After that things turned around and I've never looked back. and that beach rock is still my favorite!

Bravo! That is a terriffic story. It's amazing how rocks can help us recall so many moments in life. I wonder if that is why God had Abraham and others built alters of rememberance with piles of stone? Thanks for sharing, hermatite.

Herm, that is better than any picture, thank you for sharing. I'm so glad that those little acts of kindness turned things around for you.

Hi Toad , I have taken that fossil in rock to the club and no-one could identify it as to what species of tree it was. I may have to ask a biologist if I ever meet one. But it is from the south east of the South Island of New Zealand and a few hundred million years old I guess. I just checked.... about 180 million years ago there was a forest in that area during the Jurassic era and several forests have re-established on top of the oldest found, to be destroyed by volcanic flods etc. here is a link to information of that area www.doc.govt.nz/Explore/001~Other-Places/013~Southland/Southern-Scenic-Route/Curio-Bay-and-Porpoise-Bay/index.asp#Fossilsenjoy Jack
