It's been running like this for years. Bearing spins like normal. Doesn't seem to be a problem. Tumbler built back in 2009. Many many hours. ![](https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1942/43166173700_2371bdd665_c.jpg) This is what happens when you have a steel vibe hopper running AO 220. When the slurry gets this black the glass is pre-polished. Color indicator. Next step is AO 14,000 polish and it barely stains the slurry. It also polishes the steel hopper. ![](https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1938/44929308642_01409d0ed2_c.jpg) Got a case of gas in lower right jar evidenced by the bulge in the cap. Another day and it will pop off. ![](https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1920/30042006527_ff3e42f08d_c.jpg) And a slight case of gas in upper left barrel. ![](https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1946/43166410370_af944c5d7f_c.jpg)

Had a very similar thing with mine. Never would have noticed it if I had not been doing maintenance. It ran fine like this. It was a good enough excuse for me to build a brand new tumbler though. lol ![](https://farm1.staticflickr.com/830/41020186144_983685d8b5_c.jpg) Chuck

YIKES!!!! I hate it when that happens! ![(insane)](//storage.proboards.com/1258779/images/sjMRQMtnaKnKaqKFYToi.gif) When My Lorotone blew its lid off that grit ruined both shafts overnight. Should put a moisture sensing switch to kill the power I guess. It's all about building a smarter mouse trap.

That tumbler has been running like that for about 4 of it's 9 years on both onboard bearings. You can shut it down and spin it by hand and there is absolutely no friction. Bearing spins fine, it is the shaft that has worn down. Call it loose tolerances.
About the best preventative measure is to keep silicon carbide away from your bearings. What is mild steel, Mohs 3 ? Butter for SiC lol.
One of the bearings failed on the drive end, that one truly failed in the rollers and had to be replaced. Causing serious friction and squealing. Had to shut it down immediately.

Really loose so it can be removed w/out using a wrench when this set of shafts is not being used. It is the SiC, once bit gets in there and the gap opens it is down hill from there. I use a garden hose to wash the whole unit down since it is on a gravel/soil floor and likely washed SiC between shaft and bearing Bad practice but saves time.
