I saw on the TV this morning that the terrorist threat level had been elevated. and, I am getting ready to fly home. I brought a few slabs to show my counterpart. I also found a small rock shop. I bought a few pieces of mozarkite (agate, I think) and a quartz crystal.
I am taking bets on how many times they are going to scan my carryone baggage before they let me through?
Also, taking bets on whether or not, I will get "personally" checked because the rocks look suspicious. I am used to taking everything out of my pockets, taking off my watch and shoes, etc.
Traveling is soooo much fun.

I'm in...
When my daughter flew to Ireland the only people they scanned on the way back were a teacher and a policeman.
When she flew to Arizona last year they confiscated her sewing scissors - I almost got arrested at the airport throwing a fit - what the heck is a 13 year old girl going to do with sewing scissors??? Oh, wait - she's mixed and looks somewhat/kinda sorta/maybe/Middle Eastern/if you squint your eyes the right way and tilt your head...
Our efficient government at work...
But some guy can Fed-Ex himself across the country!

the world has become a very strange place indeed. travelling used to be fun, exciting and delays were few and usually mechanical or weather related.
i had my embroidery scissors bagged and tagged along with my whole kit in the checked luggage (we are talking a tiny fragile wicker sewing basket meant only to be carry on), and this was in the late 70's. evidently we little hippie crafts chicks have always raised suspicions.
travelling has become tedious at best and scary at worst, Big Brother was a few years late, but he arrived, nonetheless.
i'll be glad when Cal arrives home safely, KD

Back in the 80's sometime I was flying to Mexico and had 2 pairs of hair cutting scissors im purse (I was a stylist at the time). The total value of them was about $600.00. They wouldn't let me take them on board. I carried them everywhere with me, and wasn't about to let them take them from me. They finally agreed to let me put them in check in luggage, and we almost missed our plane. On the way home, they took my curling iron. "I've got a curling iron and I'm not afraid to use it."

Hey Cal. I wouldn't worry about getting searched. It will probabaly be the 80 yr lady behind you that gets searched. That is, of course, unless you didn't shape one of the slabs to look like a gun. My old boss was into WWII aircraft and was ordering all these airplane parts off e-bay, and 3 mos. after 9/11, he orders a bomb(small one used as practice, but still shaped as a bomb) and it went thru the US Mail-undetected. Yea, were safe now.
Call me when you get home. Half your rocks are cut.

We had a cigar cutter in our checked baggage to and from Florida and had no problems. One of our bags was checked at the airport where we left but that was one of those random checks they do. Most of the time what you have in your checked baggage isn't what they are worried about so much. It's what is on your carry-on. When we left Orlando we got behind a carry-on bag that was being checked and it got stopped. The guy checking had to call another guy over to take a look. Come to find out some lady had a pocketknife in her carry-on with a 4 1/2 blade on it.

Surprisingly, my carryon bag was only run through the xray machine a couple of times, but the second time, they sure did look long and hard at it. I could see them putting there faces closer to the monitor, like they would be able to see the stuff in my bag better.
I was able to walk through with no problems. I guess the TSA in Springfield, MO figure that the bad guys won't board in such a little podunk airport!
Shorty, I don't envy you at all when you travel, I am sure that you set off the machines! Having been through many airports since 911, I have found that they can change the sensitivity. Las Vegas seems to set their machines pretty low, probably because people are carrying what loot they have left. While in San Jose, they set the sensitivity really high so that a metal zipper will set off the alarms.
Tarylina, not to split fine hairs, but its UPS that allows live bodies to be shipped (I work at FedEx). Not saying that FedEx has never shipped any odd objects!
I don't carry on scissors, but sure enough, getting ready for work I noticed there were a couple of stray mustache hairs. I think you can carry one a round point scissors, but not the sharp pointed ones.
I got home fine (although I couldn't remember where I parked) and the plane landed a bit early (woohoo!).
