Hi All , I just have to share this great looking sand . It is so red that even I ( colorblind) can see it ;D ;D ;D My son Henry panned it out of the rest of the sand from the beach , in the same way as goldpanning. He is not colorblind , the lucky Lad. It is so full of sparkle in the bright sunlight that it is almost blinding These look exactly the same under a microscope as the big garnets that I have seen on this board. enjoy Jack

Me like!
That would look great on the bottom of a vase with rocks on top.

Or to weight the bottom of a tall, clear-glass flower vase.

how long did it take your son to accumulate that amount? that is way cool, you could sell that stuff by the pound!

that would look so great on glass. Have you tried spraying adhesive to a glass vase and rolling it in the sand? I bet you could get some really nice effects.

Thank y'all for looking at this red garnet sand. I just had to share it with you. Kim, no it does not hurt , I kept my gumboots on .But I'm sure it would be very safe to walk on as well on bare feet haha.
It is behaving different to other sand . It is a bit heavier and after panning most of the lighter sand off , the remaining wrong grains are being blown off gently after drying it in the sun.
Toad , you're welcome to the LONG jump, The Pacific is only several thousand miles across to the south of New Zealand . Once on our shores , head for a truly tiny settlement of 3 houses called :" Cosy Nook". It is an open windswept little fishing place with huge granite boulders. Shortly before Cosy Nook , turn left off the road down to the small beach. No . do not take your car as it won't be able to get back up the steep bank.
Thanks also for all the interesting ideas of how to use this sand . I will keep it in mind
KD , it did not take long to accumulate the sand off the beach , but it does take a fair bit of time to pan it out. I only have a small amount on that saucer , My son has over a gallon of it at his place hahaha.
Enjoy
Jack

'deepsouth' means New Zealand? I thought you were referring to Georgia or Alabama. There goes my USA-centric view getting me in trouble again.
Wow, I have always wanted to visit New Zealand. Maybe when I save up enough pennies I'll bring my family to visit that garnet beach of yours.

That is so neat, I'll bet that beach is gorgeous to look at. My hubby's Mom is from NZ, she grew up in Christchurch. Always wanted to visit, it's such a lovely country but don't think I could handle the flight. Thanks for sharing Jack, it is gorgeous.

if you were even thinking of parting with a pound or so...how much would you charge?

That would be beautiful put in layers of other sand in a vase or something. You know like sand painting. Tami
