Can't cut it. Can't find any part of this slab that would be prettier as a cab than it is now.
This isn't even the best slab we got - and I still wouldn't want to cut it up!

It would a crime to cut that slab up! Agree, keep it as it is!

There's a saying that runs through my head when I see pieces like this. "The whole is worth more than the sum of it's parts."

Yup that sucks alright.. Sucks the air right out of the room! Very nice, I agree that one's meant to stay as is.

Thanks everyone. Hubbard Basin wood is one of the best surprises I've had. Didn't know anything about it until a few days ago. Found some photos online that looked like the first slab, and during the time I was searching Woodman posted a piece in the wood thread.
Is this type of wood in an area that's difficult to get to, or that might be off-limits now? Found a web page (2009) that said one area is about 13 miles off the pavement. From the photos it looked like an easy trip. If so, all the "easy pickin's" are probably long gone.

Not off limits but bad road and real hard to find anything unless you get real lucky digging.

Oh, well. Didn't expect it could be as easy as the smooth dirt roads I saw pictured. Like most places, if you don't have some local knowledge of where to look you could dig randomly for a long time without much luck.
One thing that didn't show up well in the photos of this piece are the blue undertones in the white areas. There were only small streaks of reds, but this is still a very striking type of wood. I hope we're lucky enough to find more someday.

Yep that sucks, NOT! Dhine it up and leave it as is. Anyone else see the dead pirate and wolf? Yep. yours truly did. I also saw a pride of lions on the left side looking right down at a guy who was stuck in quicksand up to his head. Their mother is looking left{auto-correct: MOV files not allowed}ing over to the right there is a Cheetah with its cubs staring intently at two chipmunks right in the center at the bottom. Above the Cheerah there are two vultures staring at the guy who is sinking in the quicksand. Above the pirate head there are some long haired bison and on the extreme right of the image as we look at it on the bottom of the piece is a goofy horse. One final observation along the top on the crust is a whole bunch of lions looking down on the entire group. I gotta get a better hobby. I'll let you folks figure out the rest. BTW vitzitziltecpatl, congrats on a fabulous piece of artwork. Cheers, johnw

Woodman - I can see why that piece is at the top of your list. You have some pieces that show great wood structure. I like all the agate in the piece we got, but yours truly look like wood.
Maybe someday we'll stumble upon another piece more like yours. If we do, at least now there will be a chance I'll recognize it.

I have been there and dug there, the wood is pretty hard to find but there is lots of other stuff there, most of the wood was dug up back when people used to take backhoes in there before the BLM shut them down.
I have a couple of pieces I have set aside for display and if I can ever figure this picture posting thing out I will upload them here.

Hiya' Tony. Thanks for the info.
If you try to set up the photo upload thing be sure to check for an email they will send you to activate it. I didn't, and directed many unkind words toward the "grayed out" console screen until I thought about checking for one. As soon as I clicked through from their email it all worked just like Tommy posted in the tutorial.
