Nice box of rock? That's the biggest understatement I've heard in ages. It's an awesome looking batch of rock sands and I can't wait to see what you do with them. What all do you have there anyway?

Very nice looking rocks John. Be careful cutting the Malachite cuz the dust is supposed to be toxic to humans. I saw some really nice pieces at the Smithsonian polished and in it's natural state. In it's natural state, it looked like a bunch of rubber balls that had been heated and partially melted into a big blob. We want some after-pics of these rocks. I'm sure you'll do them justice.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!
I didn't know that malachite dust was toxic to humans.....and I already cut up 2 big chunks of it! Maybe THAT'S what's wrong with me!
Just kidding! Ed, is it really harmful?
What other rocks give off toxic dust? Llana and I tried to wear masks when we first started cutting rocks, and tried to remind each other when we forgot. But the masks got in the way of things like smoking, seeing, being able to breath, drinking sodas or beer, etc., so we haven't even tried to wear them for a while!
How dangerous is it to cut rocks without respiratory protection?

Sands, that looks like quite a nice box of rocks you got there! Makes me want to call Bryan and tell him to send me one! But can't do that cause I have a 5 gal. bucket 3/4 full of rocks to be cut! And plan on going to the swap meet Saturday and I know I will get something there! So, I will just have to lust over your box of rocks!! llana

Yes bwalters, malachite is extremely toxic to people. Breathing copper dust - bad.
But I would think only after long term exposure. Cutting a few slabs won't hurt you.
I think.

that Malachite has all air pockets in it so it wont be good for slabbing but it will tumble nice i was thinking i would just leave it the way it is,, its so nice lookin right now---who knows i might doit when i start back tumbling this winter

John, You're NOT tumbling now? Why not?
Dr. Toad, Thanks for the info! I won't tumble malachite again without protection, but then again, I probably won't run onto as good a deal as I did before, so I'll probably not be able to afford to buy anymore anyway.

BE, tumbling is not the problem as it does not create dust. I was thinking more or tirm and slab saws which could create dust (also, grinding wheels).
Though the slurry created while tumbling will also be copper rich so should probably be handled with latex/rubber gloves just to be safe.

Oops! Just had a 'blond' moment. Sorry, Toad. I meant that I won't CUT malachite again without protection. And I really do appreciate your warning. I had NO clue that malachite dust was hazardous.
