i have been racking my brain for a way to set the cabs without any silversmith knowledge and i think i've hit on something. i've been playing with the polymer clay making my own beads and today i thought why couldn't i set the cabs in polymer clay, then remove the cab, bake the clay, varnish the clay and glue my cab back. nothing ventured nothing gained. i've got one in the oven now and these are the 2 in the freezer so i can more easily remove them from the cutting board to bake them and hopefully the cab will pop out easier too. here are the ones in the freezer. you can see where i poked a hole trying to get the cab out so i thought i'd see if it came out easier after being in the freezer. kim

oh and i forgot to say you could mix any color you desired with the clays and there are metallic finishes you could add or glazes.

rocky, great idea! I'm going to try it myself. and I've been thinking about doing the same thing with precious metal art clay. Ever hear of that? you form it just like polymer clay then bake it with a torch ...clay burn off and you're left with pure silver. I like your cabs and you've inspired me yet again. I'm hinting for the clay for christmas. If it goes okay, I'll show pics.

i've got some books and you can actually simulate stones with the clay if your good enough. course i'm not and i don't want to simulate them cause i want real ones ;D. hermatite i think there is some info in one of my books on the precious metal clay. i'll have to do some reading. the possibilities are endless! and i can just thread them on the necklace while i'm beading. give me some ideas of textured things i can roll in the clay. i found one of my child's braided type rings and used that but i need some more ideas.

sandpaper, windowscreen, hair comb, drinking straw (for round dots), rubber stamps, I have embossed drinking glasses I've used to press clay onto. Or you could roll strings of the clay and wrap it around or weave them for a woven cab look, or you could build up layers of clay and cut it thin so you'd have a slices of different colors. Just some ideas.

also you could press the clay into glass seed beads and then bake it...haven't done this myself but now i think I might try it.

very interesting possibilites here, i've wanted to experiment with PMC....(oh no, not another addiction)...but that sure looks like a alternate method for mounting cabs, kinda earthy, tribal....
very cool Kim, burn more midnight oil, maybe you will continue to impress us all!

You could always use a rough rock to press into it gave it the look of a smooth stone set in a rough one. That looks like pretty cool stuff, where did you get it? How hard does it get? Is it very breakable when it's baked?
Cher
PS A plastic bag twisted up tight so it has wrinkled lines might work too.

Those are so cool...Are you going to string them on leather? They remind me of leather. How big are they?

the eyeball one is very scary....those turned out great, Kim.....you got the creative bone. (gene)
thanks for sharing your secrets.
i did a dog and pony show tonite, i got one re-stringing job and a bid for several pendants from a lady that sells beads herself.
she was impressed what i did with the rocks but preffered to buy the drilled stones....we didn't talk price, but i am thinking of giving her a few free to see how she likes them and then charging her 5 bucks a piece for jewelry quality, drillled and wired bail........what say you all?
you guys are my sounding board, my true wonders, i have decided to take some sort of silver jewelry course, gonna look into that tomorrow, i took one a long time ago, retained nothing,,,,,,,,,,,,got to feed the cat, good night,

When I saw this last pic - before reading the thread, I thought that you had used leather strips and thought - WOW, that's neat! It's even neater now that I discover it's clay!!! Those are too cool! I love the one in the middle. Dang, you are creative! Let's see since this morning I have decided to order some findings, then decided I would try to wrap some stones in leather like I thought you had done, now I gotta get some clay and learn how to do that! Will somebody please send me a few more hours in the day so I'll have time for all this! Don't know where ya'll find the time, esp with kiddos! WonderWomen - that's what ya' are! llana

5 BUCKS! That sounds too low for me (the lady who has yet to sell anything). Go for it. You can allways raise the price later. (5 bucks ) cookie
