Hi all. Took my two grandsons on their first rockhounding trip today and wore them out. We stopped along a creek and 2 resivors here in San Jose and got some nice jaspers and quartz type rocks. The 11yr old was more into it than the 7yr old, but they both had a ball picking out the nice rocks and asking, "Is this a good one Grampa?" I spotted a small boulder of what looked like some sort of green quartz, but they were ready to go home, so I'll have to go back some other time. Just thought I'd share my day with everyone. Nice to have a group of people like you around.
later, Ed

Yeah Ed, I love taking my grandkids out too. I know it will be a day when not many rocks are collected, but a good time will be had, and they will sleep good at night, to the joy of my daughter and her husband. Their best part is stopping to pick out the snaks we'll need to take on the trip.

I don't have any grandkids of my own, but I am Aunt Granma to my sister's grandkids. None of them is old enough to take rockhounding yet - they are 3, 20 months and 1 year old. Daniel, the 20 month old, helped me with Shorty's walking stick and says "wok", but don't know yet if he will develope into a rockhound. I am going to give him a nice polished rock of his own - one big enough he can't put in his mouth. Maybe that will help bring out the future rockhound in him! llana

Hi Ed,,,
I've taken 2 of my grandsons out a couple times and on both trips they collected way more then they could carry.
The first time we went we had so many buckets of "leaverites" that we took home it took me months to distribute them all around my yard so they wouldn't know I threw them away!!!!
The 2nd time was a LOT more productive as we went to a local garnet mine here in CT.It's called Green's Farm Garnet Mine and is really in Southbury CT but is listed as being in Roxbury CT.
Anyway,,,,,we came home with a few small buckets of crystals and a bunch of specimen pieces in the matrix.I had the same experience as you when they would constantly ask "is this a good one?" LOL,,,,,,,,,Of course none of them were throw backs!!!!!!!
I wish we could get out more often but it seems that kids today have so much available for them in the way of sports and such that they don't have much time to do much else.
I actually have to ask what their weekend schedules are to "book" an appointment!!!!
Tom
Ps:I wish Andy would give me a spell check so I wouldn't have to "embararees" myself with my "tererribble" spelling!!!
