My Frantom saw has a 5hp, 26 amp 220 single-phase motor with a separate motor starter. The on/off switch and motor starter are original. The motor starts immediately when the on button is pushed, but you need to hold the stop button down about 5 seconds or so to shut it down.I have diassembled the switch and glass-beaded the internals. I understand the principle behind a motor starter but know nothing about the internals. Any thoughts?

I am not familar with this machine but I would think without seeing a schematic the stop button should operate a normally closed switch. Test to see if working. If it is an older motor starter probably has contactors that could be filed and or replaced. Some of the older ones are silver. Maybe they have arced and carboned up so when you open the stop they are stuck and the spring won't push them back. Maybe the spring? Just make sure when you work on it you disconnect the power first.
