On the heels of a great photo thread by stephan seen here, my wife and I went up to the Ojai Raptor Center open house today. The Ojai facility hosts an an open house two times a year. We happened to catch this one today. We have never gone there before, but considering we had some successful barn owl nestings and fledgings on a family property, we had an interest in going there. In comparison to what stephan might have seen in his visit, we did not have the variety of birds that he did. I'm not faulting the Ojai facility for that...I'm just making a general comment. That said, here is some of what we saw today. Eastern Screech Owl Peregrine Falcon Kestrel Great Horned Owl Turkey Vulture Burrrowing Owl Barn Owl

aDave Great pictures! That second screech owl picture is priceless. It needs to go on a calendar. He was giving you the stink eye for taking his picture for sure.

Very cool! Since I used to work there this was like old home week to me. Your Id'd kite is a pergrine Falcon though. Wonder if that Turkey Vulture is "Handsome" the one we had when I was there. He was a character!. One of the reasons you could not see a lot of birds is only the Educational birds can be displayed to the public. Rehab birds , of which there are often many more types, cannot be displayed to the public up close.....Mel

Great pics. I always love the see-through nostrils of vultures.
The number of educational birds at the Davis Raptor Center definitely varies. With the rehab birds, they try to minimize human contact. This year some of the educational birds were non-releasable due to being too used to humans.

Thanks folks! MsAli and Sabre52 , I've fixed the ID for the falcon. I'm no bird expert. They had an ID poster at the display booth, but perhaps it was for a bird to be brought out later in the day. Don't know, as we were there early for the event which was going to run four hours. By the time we left, there was still over two hours before closing. Mel, I did not pay specific attention to the name of the vulture, but "Handsome" does seem to ring a bell. Further, Handsome is listed on the ORC website as being one of their educational ambassadors, so that was probably him. According to staff there, the longest resident is the barn owl. He (Tito) has been at the Center for 14 years.

I'm glad you got to go and take some pictures. And it's really a cool thing to see a bird like them up close We almost didn't go, but I'm glad we did at the end of the day. I'll have to plan better next time. The event was four hours (12-4), and the temp was 90 degrees. I'm kind of thinking that perhaps due to stress (the amount of people and heat) that maybe the birds were doing two hour sessions at a time. We arrived around 12:30 and left around 1:30. When we left, the same birds were still out. Maybe the thing to do is arrive around 1:30ish, get some photos, and then see if the birds are rotated out. Guess I'll have to call and find out how they do that.

Great pics, Dave. I've thoroughly enjoyed the two recent raptor threads. If I can't get that close, I guess these pics are the next best thing. Thanks for sharing!

When we talk next, I'll have to tell you the story about my issues with the camera. I had a "malfunction" of sorts, and I didn't originally take it in with me. Glad I was able to get it sorted out.

Holy smokes, Tito is still kicking!!!!! That's pretty amazing because periodically we'd get a disease go through the place and some of the Ed birds would succumb. I know Luna, the Great Horned Owl, one of my favorite birds died not long ago. I've gotten so I never ask Kim because I'm always afraid I'll hear Rosie the Red Tailed Hawk has died and I trained that bird from a young'un and got real attached. I miss her a lot....Mel

In short, it was the wrong button being pushed which caused my led screen to go blank. Never had that issue before. I was finally able to figure it out, but only after speaking with another guy there who had a 7D body. You'll get more detail later.

Yep, wildlife will be impacted by the fires, and that's a sad thing. I remember being at the Sayre fire and watching a Great Horned Owl that was obviously affected by ash in the eyes and effectively being blind. It couldn't fly, and it was simply tumbling along the hillside. Thanks for the info.
