After an absence of many years I have just bough a Lot-o tumbler from The Rock Shed. As I live in Scotland UK, it will be a few weeks till I get it here. I had a Lot-o tumbler in the past but I do not remember the recipient I used. Jack ( Yorkshire ) visited me and helped me. Can someone suggest what grit I need as I need to restock in anticipation of my vibe arriving.

Greeting Dermot, It's the usual 220, 400, 600, 1200 and polish of choice! The usual? I do not use any of those grits in my lot-o. I use 120/220 SC, 500 AO, 1000 AO then 14,000 A/O polish. Ask 10 people get 10 answers I suppose. The lot-o is a very forgiving machine and breaks down grits very efficiently. For many batches I run a longer amount of time in 500 and skip the 1000 step. The 500 will break down enough over time to go directly to polish. If I used 60/90 or straight 80 for stage one I would use straight 220 for stage two. I use 46/70 for stage one so 120/220 works better for my stage two. Chuck

Greetings Chuck, In the USA you can pretty much get everything you want at affordable price including postage.
Rockshed: 1 Pound of Rock Shed's AO polish = $4.75, postage to UK = $23.50, total = $28.25 + Import duty 20% + $10 Import fee = $43.90. 5 pounds of Rock Shed's AO polish = $20.00, postage to UK = $71.65, total = $91.65 + Import duty 20% + $10 Import fee = $119.98.
In the UK Grits: 60/90 SC = Import 80 SC = OK 120/220 SC = Import 220 SC = OK 400 SC = OK 500 AO = Import 600 SC = OK 1000 AO = Import 1200 SC = OK Diamond loose grits = Import Diamond pastes 5ct 1gram = OK
Polishes: 14000 AO = Import Cerium Oxide = OK Diamond loose polishes = Import Diamond pastes 5ct 1gram = OK Tin Oxide = OK Zinc Oxide = OK

Thanks all for your advice. Yes in UK not everything is available without buying in from US. That’s why I called out to all UK members in another post to find out availability of grits. I have been away too long and need new info

That certainly requires a different recipe then most of us here in the U.S. are using. Running separate stages for 400 SC and then 600 SC seems like a very small step. Do you do that even in a vibe tumbler that is breaking the grit down rapidly or that just for rotary tumblers? I think in my lot-o vibe tumbler I could run your 400 for three days and then jump all the way to your 1200 skipping the 600. Looking at your list what is your polish of choice or do you need to have different polishes for different hardness of rocks? The common 14,000 A/O here seems to work on just about everything eliminated the need for a polish arsenal. Chuck

I'll add after seeing these prior posts...you are aware that a rotary tumbler is best suited for your coarse grind, yes? The Loto won't handle everything.
