I own a gold mine in Cali and when I get the specimen out of the vein I need to etch away the rock using air scribes, water gun, HF, and sand (soda) blasting techniques. It takes patience, an eye and skill. Nothing I would rather do with my time than this except mining, playing poker, playing with my pugs and most of all hanging with my GF (underground 180 feet!) mlgdave

What is the difference between abrasion, dissolving and/or laser removal? You are reducing the size by some means.

Amazing piece. How much work did you do to get off the gunk?

No. I’d call it cleaning. It’s a lovely specimen!

I'd call it mineral specimen prep, not carving, though some of the same techniques/tools could be used in gem carving. It's a really nice gold/matrix specimen.

Beautiful specimen! I agree with gemfeller. I'd call it specimen prep.

This specimen looks like a tailless dragon with the head at the left.

I have always called it specimen prep as well and just wondering if it could be both. I know "carving" would be more in the category of turning it into a "cat" or "heart" or "whatchamacallit" but I do definitely "carve" the rock out of the way "Carve - cut (a hard material) in order to produce an aesthetically pleasing object or design." :-)
Anyways hope you enjoy the gold! (I am doing some videos of some other specimens I will be prepping this week and will post them)

Your work is impressive! It reminds me of some great gold exhibits that were on display in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science several years ago.
