One of the major things people are overlooking is that without an atmosphere to filter solar and other radiations anyone tying to live on Mars would not liver very long with the amount of radiation they will be exposed to on a continual basis. Solar and gamma ray bursts will fry them. Before anyone lands there they'll have to wear their 35 pound lead helmet for 6 months*. Longer if they can't shelter underground on Mars. Guaranteed to protect your brain from damage for up to 85% of solar and cosmic radiation — or your money back. *Removal for brief scratching permitted.

Radiation ain't shit. Google radiation hysteresis There are various forms of radiation. Like I was pointing out to someone the other day on YouTube all freaked out about microwaved food. He was claiming the microwaved food gave off radiation so I pointed to him yes, it is called heat just like our body's give off. Microwave ovens do not make food radioactive as too many people believe.

Humans and their habitat are the same size target on Earth, for the same projectiles, as they on on a moon base or a Mars base.
I prey nobody is worried about meteorite strikes harming them.

As I mentioned in an earlier post the Earth has an atmosphere that helps burn of a lot of meteorites before they hit Earth and break up larger meteorites. The moon does not have an atmosphere to do this and Mars a very thin atmosphere making impacts more of a risk in frequency and intensity.

Freedom with consequent responsibilities are libertarian values. Not anarchy. I believe the term one might use is minarchy, the minimum government humanly possible. Many differing views on what that looks like, personally I like the idea of a late 18th century level of oversight, with a budget to match. Back to Mars: Elon Musk appears to have said there's a 70% chance he will travel to Mars. I think there's a 99.99% chance that he is as completely unhinged as the guy he named his cars after, though not nearly as bright.

Elon Musk appears to have said there's a 70% chance he will travel to Mars. Don't know if it's true, but I've read that he anticipates the first "tourist" trips will be one-way only. If true, the people signing up for these trips are even less bright than he is.

Even if the first mission to Mars is planned to be a round trip, I think that the odds are high that the crew will die there.

By the time you go there, look around a bit, and get back, it’s time for another colonoscopy.
We’ll keep a light on for ya.

I believe its large enough to transport 200 people plus cargo there. He plans are grand and well outside our ken. So far outside we have zero business to judge. Quite honestly, I bet he gets humans on mars in the next two decades. I believe he thinks within a decade. Remember, he has the cash to build and test BFR to prove reliability.

Yes Boeing is after it too I just don't see it. Again the biggest problem is that we do not have the technology currently to protect the people from the massive amounts of radiation they will be exposed to daily over the 7 month trip there, and it still alive the time they spend there and if they are still alive and not mutated monsters the trip back.

Speaking of Elon Musk, did anyone here on the West Coast catch the Space X launch from Vandenberg this morning? It was scheduled for 10:32 a.m. but it slipped my mind so I missed it. I saw a previous Space X night launch 3-4 weeks ago and it was fascinating. It was the first successful return of the reusable first stage to the launch pad. It was eerie from my distant perch to watch it firing its retro-rockets and maneuvering to a landing. I read somewhere it landed just a few feet from the pad where it had launched from.
I recall reading Robert A. Heinlein SF stories decades ago speculating that private enterprise would take over the next phase of space exploration. It all came back to me this week when several such entrepreneurs announced a non-government-sponsored return to the moon in the near future.

I will repeat. Google this "Radiation hysteresis". The human body will surprise even you. You are as in tune with the human body as anyone. I believe even you can be surprised. My brain has bought in. I'm willing to be wrong. And so are his colonists. Nothing ventured, nothing gained
