Hello All, I bought this limb cast probably 20 years ago from a private party, but never took a picture of it until tonight. It is my favorite limb cast and measures about 6-inches in diameter. It has an agate rind all the way around it that nicely shows the pattern of the bark. If anyone knows where this may have been found, please let me know (I would go a long way for another one like this one). Thanks for looking!

Blue forest could be one possibility.

Blue forest could be one possibility. I've got quite a few Blue Forest pieces but I've never seen one with moss in it. You're right about the agate rind on many of the Blue forest pieces though.

It has aged beautifully. If I knew where it came from, I'd probably have already been there myself. Very nice!

Thanks to all for your comnents. roy, I've only dug Hampton Butte once, and didn't find anything remotely similar to this (all the stuff I got looked like chunks of green jasper). However, someone from here (Steve Holms?) posted a beauty from there some years back, so maybe it's time to re-visit the area.

That would be one of my favorites, too. Although I haven't seen anything exactly like that from Hampton Butte, there is moss agate in some (and also in some of nearby Congleton Hollow, Dendrite Butte and Bear Creek areas). Could have come from somewhere else in the Clarno Formation, or from Washington (Yakima River canyon has some mossy limb casts), Wyoming (Wiggins Fork), Madagascar, Romania. Thing about limb casts is that you can find an exceptional piece in an area and search for a long time all around it and not come up with anything similar, even though you'd think that they all formed under the same conditions and should be fairly similar. Yours might just be another of those one-off finds, regardless of from where it came.

Those 2 are sweet! Especially the second one - I think it is the closest to what I have.

I've only wandered around the rock shop in Marfa on one occasion but the color and dispersal of the plumes look like Marfa Agate to my unsophisticated eye. Whether there are limb casts expected there is not clear.

Mossy, plumey limb casts like that are fairly common around George West Texas. Some are totally moss agate replacements inside with only slight evidence they were ever pet wood. Colors in your example look like the ones from that part of Texas too.
