I just bought a little palm-sized fan on the advice of my furnace man for the motor of my QT66. Will this keep it much cooler?

it certainly can't hurt! anything that generates heat can always use a little boost in ventilation. the motors on my tumblers run warm, hot almost. it sez in the instructions that they will do, but, it can't be good for anything to stay that hot for that long.
i'd say a litttle extra heat sinking is a good thing....but that is just my opinion.

Hi Mazanec, Extra cooling in a hot place will be helpfull. If you stand in front of a fan on a hot day you will notice how strong the cooling effect is.

Most small motors contain a plastic or metal cooling fins inside...could it be that they are filled with "fuzz" ?? you might want to take a can of "Dust Off" and spray them out and see if any gunk comes flying out...this could inhibit airflow.

Mazanec,,,, I have had my rotary tumblers for almost 6 years now and they run just about all the time. The motors run VERY hot and this is normal. I burned out the rear friction bearing on my first tumbler motor some 6 years ago because I didn't oil it enough. This and over loading your tumbler are the 2 main reasons for bearing failure. I oil my motors about every 2 weeks with 3-4 drops of straight (nondetergent) motor oil.I have yet to find fractional 1500 rpm motors with sealed lifetime bearings so it's oil or nothing. If you keep a little chart to show when you oil your motor/motors it helps a lot. (at least for my memory banks) The little fan you have won't hurt but I don't think it's necessary. "A little drop ull do ya"! Tom

My one tumbler that I assembled I put a used motor on and I noticed that it ran real hot, so hot that it stopped a couple of times. I ran a piece of duct work down and hooked it up to the furnace fan. I run the fan on my furnace just about all the time and since then it hasn't stopped.

Dave said not to oil the motor. He is the owner of the local rock store, so I dunno...and I know about fans cooling people. Don't they help evaporation of sweat? Motors don't sweat.

I have my tumblers running out in the garage where it gets very hot in the summer so I put a box fan up on the work bench where they sit just for extra cooling. Last Saturday evening as I was leaving for the evening I noticed that my model B had stopped. I gave it a little nudge and it started rolling again but the next morning I found it had stopped again. Luckily I had a spare brand new motor so I just changed out motors and continued on. The moter does not smell burned even though it sat locked up for who knows how long. When I get time I will take it apart and clean up the bearings and see if it comes back to life. I'll bet it does. Those motors are pretty tough. Bob
