Hi all. Well I finally got my digital camera. A self indulgent birthday gift. Haven't had time to practice with it yet cuz I was busy making my Grandson's birthday gift. This is my other hobby/profession, and I plan on merging the two(rocks and wood) to see what I come up with. And here is the little birthday boy (3yrs old) Sorry, no rock pics yet, but don't worry, they'll be coming. These digital cameras are great. The hardest part of using them is getting used to not having to look through the viewfinder. Ed

Hey Stoner , That's a mighty fine looking truck for your grandson. Congratulations with his birthday and with the truck.
It should hold quite a good load of polished rock haha

Fantastic job on the dump-truck! The best wooden toy I ever managed to make for my kid was a set of building blocks. Kind of surprising to me that I managed to make even those and still keep all seven fingers....wait a second....maybe I didn't do so well afterall?

Holy guacamole! Now that's a truck! What a great birthday gift and I am sure he will treasure it all his life. Your grandson is a cutie too. Bet he loved his new truck.
The other great thing about digital is you see the pic immediately and you can delete those OOPS pictures.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you ........

Great wood work Ed!! The truck is just fantastic and you're a fantastic grand pa as well!! I hope your grandson enjoys his gift and always remembers you for it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I envy you with your work with wood.I have never been able to work with wood and God know's I've tried. I don't think there's a board on the planet I can't split!lol I can make just about anything I want with a piece of metal (weld,machine,braze/solder,form,etc.)Here's a little sea scape I did out of solder and lead: I'm not too shabby with rocks either but you give me a piece of wood and I can destroy it in record time!! Bravo Ed!! Thanks,,,, Tom

what a nice piece, Tom...how big is it? very well done! have you done more like that? if so, you KNOW what we want! MORE PICS!
i took a welding class a long time ago and ended up with a 25 pound birdhouse....(that is a Baritone TWEET). had to hoist it into the tree on a chain...haha.
i am most envious of you and Ed being able to work with a variety of other interesting materials and tools!
we want to see more stuff, the both of you!

Awww Ed, your grandson is adoreable and your truck is awesome. That's beautiful work! I used to play around with wood a little, nothing that talented though. You ought to be selling those on eBay, they'd go like hot cakes!
And Tom, that seascape is wonderful! Such talent you two have ... I'm jealous!.
I agree ... you two should show us more pics.

You are blessed to have such a family. That looks like burly maple to me. I just finished some work with some burly walnut. I sanded it to 1200 and tung oil per sand. It came out like a mirror You can laminate stone into wood blanks, such as knife blanks, frames, etc. I have done it with dumorite slabs. Example, on a 2"X5" X .025 I made a rectangular cut out. I beveled it 45 degrees. I epoxied the dumorite into the cut out, I had to also trim the slab, and fitted it to a knife blank. The scales as they are called I made an eliptical form to grind the wood and stone. It worked like a rocker. I based the arc on a 4' radius. With the disimilar materials and how they grind/sand, I had to control the cut away of materials. It came out real well. The scale was yellow ironwood and the yellowish and deep blue, almost cobalt, it looked real well. The stone was finished in cerium oxide. I had to tape off the wood to polish the stone as the cerium stained the wood and couldn't be removed. Lesson learned. The guage kept too much wood from being removed. It really made a great looking handle. If I do another, I might try rose wood, or Lignum Vitae. Great woodworking!

Hi all. Thanks for the kind words. Doc's right, it is figured maple and cherry, and just a clear laquer finish. It took me longer to go thru my lumber and pick out the pieces than it did to build the truck! As he took it out of the box I heard someone say, "There's a family heirloom". He was grinning ear to ear and had it filled up with some of the other gifts he had gotten. I thought of putting some polished rocks in the back of the truck, but he's a little too young to appreciate them. Good idea Shorty, wish I had thought of the rock hubcaps. That's ok, I'll make some and add bring some glue with me next time we go to see them. And yes, I will be posting more pics of rocks and things now. I can't believe what a difference there is between digital and film cameras. These things take super-clear pics. I guess the old Olympus is gonna retire to the closet, but I got many good years of service out of it. Tom, you may not be able to do justice to wood, but you've got a great talent with metal. Nice piece of work. Well, gotta go post some rock pics.
