I am looking for an 18 or 24" HP (the old ones) or Frantom saw, so I put an ad in the local Craigslist. The prices people are asking seem much higher than I anticipated. I wonder what you guys think such saws should run. I must have got smokin' deals on the saws I have! I just specified that I wanted a complete saw (except for the guards). What are your thoughts?

The conventional wisdom out west seems to be about $100.00 per inch for an average condition used saw, lots of people ask more, I try to pay significantly less. Saws are fairly common out here, in fact in the last month I have picked up 2 HP 24" saws, A HP 18, and a pristine HP 14" with an undamaged lucite lid, along with combos, arbors, tumbler, vibe polisher and other misc. In an area of the country where they are more rare your results may vary, and your ability to rebuild less than perfect saws can save you a bunch of cash, but should only be considered if you have fairly high mechanical aptitude.

I rebuilt the two 24's I have. I need to increase my cutting capacity temporarily but am surprised there doesn't seem to be more of these units available on the west cost. I checked listings in other major areas where I thought there should be some but no luck

It is getting harder to find saws anymore, I used to buy about 20-40 saws a year, I think I only bought 10 this year and I paid more for most of them than I wanted to.

As new equipment prices increase, guess which direction used prices go? I stumble on amazing deals at yard sales sometimes. Have to have a seller without a clue though.

Or find a situation where the seller has to sell. In the case of the 24" HP I bought for $1200, the seller was moving out of the country and had to vacate an old building. He threw in about 300 to 400 pounds of Choyas/Brazilians/misc cutting material for free. Knew it was one of "those" deals and moved quickly to purchase. It was good that I did as another potential buyer contacted him about an hour after I did about the saw. All it needed was a good cleaning and it's cutting now. Learned a good while back, when one of "those" opportunities come along in life, move on it as the window usually closes quickly

Lee is correct 100 dollars an inch is ok for a good condition hp or frantom. But if your looking closely and often you can do better. I’ve seen frantom 24 go for 3000 and a lot of high asking prices. The work that a 24 can d can justify up to that. If it’s being used every now and then you may consider a royal or even Hillquist. I see them for less still good saws

Part of it is just keep looking. We got our old HP 18" with a good blade for $600. Of course we had to disassemble the whole thing and carry it up a flight of stairs to get it out of a basement. Thought we might have to cut the legs off and weld them back on but it barely squeezed through the door. House had been remodeled since the saw was placed in the basement. Just got lucky on that one. Only one I had seen that cheap within 500 miles and I'd been looking for quite a while. Depends I think on where you are as well, that was in northern Wyoming, Cody area.
