my 1st letter opener - ground and polished the stone on the genie - drilled a humongous hole with about a 3mm burr - got tired of drilling and put a bone bead on and voila it was right!! this messes up the coloring of the letter opener but you can see the stone well kim

Very nice Kim! That looks like parrot wing, is it? Is it going to be a Christmas present? Sure will be a nice one.

WoW Kim, very cool. What kind of stone is that? Love the color in it, really neat.
Cher
PS ... What's the big stone under the letter opener, that's pretty cool too.

Great job Kim. Nice shape on the handle, bet it feels really nice to hold. Hope you don't mind, but I think I'll use your idea. I used to make one piece letter openers out of exotic woods like purple heart, Cocobolo, etc. But now that I see yours, I think using a stone for the handle would be cool.

sands if christine doesn't like the length - send it back and i'll make it longer! llana and cher that's one of the stones the neighbor brought me - no idea what it actually is - it's from new mexico, has internal fractures possibly from the way it is mined (which worked well for this piece but wouldn't look so well on jewelry) and is soft which helped with that great big hole ;D. it was going to be a christmas gift for someone in my family but we had spend the night company this weekend and when the child's mom came to pick her up she saw the stone and opener sitting out for me to work on and it sold unfinished. so now it's finished and will be a gift for someone else's family. ed it has a curve on the side and back that is perfect for a right handed person's fingers. it just fits perfectly in the hand. ed you are responsible for this idea as when i went to buy the supplies for the desk pen this was sitting right by it...and the memo holders lol. kd i got all the desk supplies here steebar.com/Accessories/DeskAccessories.htmli used a 40 grit burr rounded on the end to drill the hole - got the set off e-bay. because the hole has to be deep and wide i'm trying to use softer stones that aren't so hard to drill. i got a plastic winnie-the-pooh mug that was deep enough for the stone, filled it with water, put the stone in, held it with my fingers and drilled until i had a good hole going then just picked it up and drilled dipping it to fill the hole often and emptying out the ground material. then i glued it and the bead on. i have my eye on a piece of stefonite but am a little scared of drilling such a large hole in something hard. sure would make an awesome handle if i can do it. kim

Maybe I'm nuts, but that stone looks an awful lot like some of the "mine-run" emerald I've tumbled. Is that possible? It's beautiful!

Hey Kim, that looks great. Now you just need to learn how to knap some flint or obsidian to make the blade. Maybe you could colaborate with Don on that!
