Yup. I have a niece who does deserve coal this year, but since she has tried to be a complete brat, I'm planning on giving her a sphere. So, to kill two birds with one stone (pun fully intended) I plan on giving her an anthracite sphere. However, there in lies the problem, I have none. So, who has some decent sized chunks laying around? Preferably a 3 to 4 inch piece. I'm willing to compensate for the shipping, material, and if I get enough material I'll gladly make you a sphere as well. Shoot me a PM, let me know what you have. We can discuss details. Thanks in advance for the help with this gift for her.

Several years ago I filled a small pail with plastic "coal" meant for model train layouts. Gave it to my wife as an Xmas gift. I'm still recovering from the beating she gave me.

I think an anthracite sphere may be rewarding, rather than punishing, bad behavior. But then, maybe she's not a rockhound! The Victorians made jewelry using anthracite gems. Anyone live near a rail line leading to a power plant?

That looks more like cannel coal, also known as shale coal or oil coal. A bituminous coal. Too soft for anything other than burning.

Isn't Jet also a gem quality coal? You might have more luck finding some rough on ebay that you can get quickly.

Check out this guy on Ebay. He has lots of it in different sizes. Even a rainbow colored one. Who knew?

Thanks all for replies. I think ebay may be best bet on this one. I wouldn't mind stabilizing the ones you have, but will pass. And yes, seems like a reward more than a prank, however I know deep down she's really just getting coal, albeit pretty coal, still coal. And she is a ever so entry level rockhound. She's helped me dig at the Llanite outcrop and trudge through Llano river. She actually found the parent/donor that I made this one from. She also comes over and digs through my piles to feed her tumbler. I had a piece of rainbow coal that I made into a pendant. A guy bought it for his wife and she loved it. It wasn't cheap, either.

I also gave my wife a lump of coal our first Christmas together. Unwise. THough we just passed 39 years together, so I recovered.
