Beautiful. Many types of Jasper do not have names unless they are from well known locations. I gave up banging my head against a wall to identify all of the jaspers I find on my land.
If you found it and it is not from a known location with a specific name, then name it.

Thank you. I cut a few small slabs from it as well, it was pretty good sized. I'm trying to do that with the larger rocks that I have- my method is so that I have a couple to tumble and a couple in case I ever start to cab...

I don't have a clue either about the names- so far everything I have is self-collected (except for the obsidian which was a trade), mostly from the Oglala National Grasslands. The grasslands are stuffed full of agates, jasper and wood. I love to get out there. I actually have this weekend off from my second job. Saturday will be my daughter's basketball game. Sunday will be rockhounding with two of my sons and maybe my grandson, it's supposed to be about 51 and sunny here.

In truth, much of the jasper material picked up is float or material that has been transported far from its original beds and thus is jumbled with other types of rocks. Its much easier to identify the origin of a stone if its broken out of a specific geological formation or situation and not just part of 1000 ft depth of Pleistocene river deposits. At least that's the way it is in most areas I collect.
