These were started in 600 SIC on 11/28. Then went through the following stages with a 24 hr Borax cleaning between. 1200 AO, 12,000 AO and Rapid Polish. Just completed a 48 hour Borax run. 1 lb. rotary. 60% media (plastic pellets, stage specific ad small ceramic) and 40% fossils/rocks. There is still some polish in the cracks/crevices/crystals. Everything is in a bag of water waiting my next move. Any suggestions? Thinking a soft toothbrush? Overall, I like how they turned out, except for the remaining polish. The Petoskey will need some hand polishing, which I had planned for. The Petoskey was pre shaped with hand files, whet stone and various sandpapers.

Here were the other ones in this batch. Volcanic and a couple of unknowns. The black one with Quartz banding is metallic. I was hoping the black parts would undercut, leaving the bands. The other one in the photos with the black/quartz is a milky quartz with some awesome maroon hues. I did not think the lava "bomb" (on the right) would turn out as good as it did. This one is too small to be actually called a "bomb", but more a lava "pain in the neck", as I imagine it would have hurt if it fell on your neck after being ejected from the volcano. Some of the other, larger ones I have found contain blue Opal like inclusions. Anyway, thanks for looking.

You might try a combination of borax and Ivory soap or Dawn. If I remember right the borax softens the water and allows the soap to stay in suspension better. The soap might then wash the polish out of the cracks/pits more effectively. Ultimately the toothbrush may be your most reliable tool.

I have both the Ivory and the Dawn. Am highly allergic to both the smell and skin reaction of the Ivory. Something about wearing a respirator when using the Ivory does not appeal to me. Dawn does not effect me, so might try that. Thanks.

Both my daughter and I are highly allergic to Ivory soap. We both go into anaphylactic shock when breathing in the fumes, even when holding a bar. Anything Ivory causes this for us. Touching a bar, shampoo, body wash, etc., results in huge blisters on hands. A friend recently gave me a bar, so I decided to check and see if I was still highly allergic to it. I almost had to call 911 for treatment after opening the bar. Was able to use supplemental oxygen and breathing techniques to prevent that. this confirmed that I should stay away from anything Ivory.
When my daughter was born in the 1980's, the hospital used Ivory products on her. The results were a huge rash and her being put in an incubator for breathing. I also had to be given supplemental oxygen, as I could not breath when near her. the hospital changed the soaps they used with her. End result was a 5 day stay in the hospital for both. Permanent record that were are highly allergic to anything Ivory.

johnw Do the shells still look like bugs to you? Hello, fernwood, well I can now say they do not look like bugs and I am way too much of a gentleman and aware of peoples feelings to render a complete and honest opinion of what they remind me of. I will say this however the piece in the picture one down from the Petroskey stone, on the right, the reddish stone with big wide "eyes," is more than profound. Are the ones next to that picture, the same, but from a different angle and how big is it? Thanks for sharing these great pics. Cheers, johnw

They are probably fossil corals with quartz replacement. These are smaller ones, about 1 1/2". My largest one is about 7" long. They are all over my land.

Looking good Beth! Just ordered some of those Bugs from Shawn at TRS looking fwd to trying my luck on them. The quality was much better than expected. These were the "rejects" from the batch. Many of what was received still has the pointy ends and very little, if any, matrix. I am sure you will have a great time with them.

I've had some petosky stones awhile. I think I'll try to polish them after looking at your beautiful pictures.
