Where the digging area is mostly on Clear Creek which runs into Stinking Water creek and I have never smelled anything from Clear Creek, but it is big area and there very easily could be some smelly springs. |

Yeah, the official story is that it is named after sulfurous springs somewhere in the vicinity, but I've never heard of anyone who has visited them (or even the location). I used to think that maybe Stinking Water Pass was just to contrast with the Drinkwater Pass to the east along Hwy 20, but no, there was some rancher named Drinkwater  |
