Where the digging area is mostly on Clear Creek which runs into Stinking Water creek and I have never smelled anything from Clear Creek, but it is big area and there very easily could be some smelly springs.

Yeah, the official story is that it is named after sulfurous springs somewhere in the vicinity, but I've never heard of anyone who has visited them (or even the location). I used to think that maybe Stinking Water Pass was just to contrast with the Drinkwater Pass to the east along Hwy 20, but no, there was some rancher named Drinkwater
