Hi all , here follow some fotos of the latest trips to the beaches. This time we found some petrified wood on the one beach and on the other ......was a huge amount of bigger rocks , mostly granite. This was the last beach before the end of the earth. Bluecliff beach only accessible at low tide at the foot of a high cliff and some small streams come out of the cliff. Standing in one of the gorges was just plain icy cold. Back on the beachrocks was definitely warmer. We did not only find rocks , but also some nests of seabirds with big eggs in them, at least twice the size of hen eggs. These nests were on the plateau, rocks piled up by the sea. Birdnest at Tiwai point beach Old accessroad washed away at blue cliff beach My son Henry in the gorge of a small stream near the beach looking up the gorge with a huge layer of rocks way up high fossil shell rock some old machinery on the beach Cliff face collapsed where old road was before banded rock nice pattern in rock patterned rock turned over reveals a different face hairpin bends !! another fossil rock, old seafloor We took a few granite rocks home for the garden and this one stood out so had to come home too Lat night I cut up a rock that had been in the garden for some time and look what I found inside...no , not a gem of the gemstone kind but still a gem in it's own right. a slice, to cut off the outside after downsizing the rock as it was almost too big for my saw turned over the slice looks like this and the leftover of the rock still in the saw. I will have to cut more pieces off as it is still too big for the flatlap vibrator. Have to watch out for the fractures too. The brecciated rock within is 4 inches by 2,5 inches Thanks for looking Jack

I wished you could join me Sands haha. I would give you the grand tour !!
I am still waiting for 600 grit and am stuck in a rut as far as the polishing goes, unless I let the rocks tumble for several weeks in 220 grit and hope that that is enough as a prepolish. I have my doubts , but maybe I should just try it and see what happens.
Take care
Jack

Thanks Jack, that's so neat to see pics of your area down there. How neat is that to find that birds nest, any idea what kind of bird those eggs belong to? Bigger than chicken eggs, dang ... must be a big bird! I appreciate you bringing another part of the world to us, not to mention the neat rocks too. I love that swirly lavendar/purple stone, please take pics of it when you cut it ok.

Hi all , thanks for your comments , always good to hear !! Yes it is great to be able to walk on the beaches and meet no-one else. That swirly purply rock is still on the beach , I am keen to go back there and go look for it . I could not possibly carry all the rocks home that's why I took some pictures . Tomorrow I will be on another beach again with the club , looking for petrified wood. I will check on those birdnests , see if I can find the owner of the eggs . I just hope it will be a bit warmer without the rain and hail we had the past 2 days. Jack

On boy, if I had to choose what's best out of those pics, it sure would be hard! That beautiful beach, the gorge and all those cool rocks! Sheesh, you got it all!
LOOK AT ALL THOSE ROCKS!!!! I can see me picking up rocks til I couldn't bend over anymore, then sipping on an umbrella drink by the ocean til my back was ready to go again!
If they are all as neat as the one you have already cut, I'd say you have hit the motherload! Geez, that's gonna be a beauty when it polished.

Very nice Jack. Isn't it amazing what you find inside a rock? In that pic showing the granite you brought home for the garden, it looks like you should be tumbling the landscape rock you've got there. Have you? And were there any nice pieces in it? Great pics. Thanks for showing us what's down under.

OMG Jack .... lol how could you walk away and leave it? You need a backpack ... or if you already have one, a bigger one. And buckets, lots of buckets. I know what you mean though about things getting too heavy. When I go, I have a couple of 5 gal pails in the truck of the car, a place to empty the ice cream buckets to carry with me as I'm walking around looking. My daughter says I need to learn to pick up smaller rocks .... ha ha ha.

Well , the eggs I found in the nest have hatched and 3 healthy looking chicks were asleep until I woke them . More nestes were found with eggs in them. And this time the seagulls were present , but to far away to take pictures. This time I did find a good sized piece of petrified wood and some other rocks were hauled home as well. I do have a backpack and a large sack which gets swung over the shoulder. Once the sack is heavy I start filling up my pockets . Usualy I am last back at the car as I take the largest amount of rocks away from the beach. And I belive I am the most tired as well hahaha. A great was had , with only a sprinkling of rain . the seagull chicks strange rock and cut petrified wood found polished batch batch out of 60/90 grit thanks for looking Enjoy Jack

Hi Tom , that yellow rock is a quartzite, has no visible breakages in it so should polish up real well. There is petwood that has a similar colour , but no white streaks like my rock.

That yellow rock is really neat, I like it! Thanks for the pics of those baby birds, aren't they the cutest little things. Hard to believe they'll grow up to be pesty seagulls. ;D WOW You can really polish some big rocks. What do you do with them?

Hello Jack,
Oh my ... it's a good thing I do not live there ... I would be gone for weeks! Oh yea, get back to the way it was years ago. Make shelter, gather water and leave the world behind ... I am serious ... you would have to call out the search and rescue to get me back to civilization.
How do you stand it ... all of those rocks ... I would flat go buggy!
Thanks for the photo's ... too cool!
John
