And the other day, there it was on a friend's Facebook page... save these animals that are in danger! They are going to be sent to auction tomorrow! Getting out the word for a friend, here's the number to call!
Except, of course, that the original post is from 2011.
I wrote back, "PLEASE STOP REPOSTING THIS! It is over 7 years old. Can you imagine if you were the one who was listed, and people are still calling your number years later?"
Now I've got people all ticked off, "I was just trying to help!" "She couldn't know any better, she was trying to help."
I need to say that this friend is an intelligent adult, quite computer-savy.
I have seen this with animal rescues, missing persons, and supposed abductions, reposted endlessly.
People, Google is your friend! A (very) quick search will reveal the the 52 free Thoroughbreds bound for slaughter were saved long ago, the missing person's body has since been recovered, and the supposed abduction was a hoax from the start. In any of these cases, a re-post is the OPPOSITE of helping. You are making things worse, not better. Sharing is not always caring.
On the other hand, if you are the one creating a legit post about a missing, person, animal, or whatever, please include relevant information to help prevent this from happening. Don't say, "Shipping to slaughter this Saturday," say, "Saturday, Aug. 3, 2011" or whatever the date is. If an animal or person is missing, don't say, "Missing from Springfield," with no state or date.

Something that bothers me about FB postings is when people ask a question, having done no research on their own. There is so much info already out there, why expect someone to type up the info once again?
Thanks. That felt good to get off my chest. Lynn

There's an easy solution. Delete your FB account and move on. I only established one for a class reunion sort of thing. I deleted my account when folks messaged me about stuff I sent them. Problem was, I never sent anyone anything. I don't trust the platform one bit, so there's no need for me to be there.

I especially love the ones that say things like "if you don't like and share this thing I'm manipulating you into you're heartless", or some such thing. Seems that social media is the engine for the de-evolution of society. Now let me go check my wall...

I discovered that you can hide posts from the pages people share It's been a great way to clean up what I dont want to see

"Share this or you're a terrible person! Share this right now, quick don't do any research or engage your brain!" Phooey! The trouble is, social media is (almost)the only way to communicate with some people. They live far away, and/or won't call you back when you call. We are apparently so "connected", and yet so lonely.

The trouble is, social media is (almost)the only way to communicate with some people. They live far away, and/or won't call you back when you call. We are apparently so "connected", and yet so lonely. ^THAT!^ I joined FB because people in organizations I belong to use it as a bulletin board. I reconnected to people I haven't been in contact for years. It has it's good points. It also encourages my inner troll, not so good. I guess it's ultimately just another tool, like a wrench I can use to turn a nut, or to hit a nut over the head. And it's my choice, so when I choose poorly I sure shouldn't be blaming the Zuck...
