I received this today from digging buddy. Looks like it is tilia or popular. Stinking Water mountains 10 inches tall.

That wood reminds me of some of the spalted wood I use to make exhibition grade pistol grips. Seems the Stinking Water material even retains original color? I've marveled at how many of your oak specimens even have a genuine oak color in addition to fabulous grain and texture.

I doubt that any of the photos of Pet wood that I have posted shows the original colors of the wood. The colors come from the minerals that are in the water during the petrification process. They do look nice tho! I am burning some spalded maple for firewood right now, had a big ded maple come down a few weeks ago.

Yeah, I figured the minerals were responsible for the color, but it's an amazing coincidence that stinking water oak has such an "oak" color. It's incredibly beautiful.

I have some that is black, some brown , some the golden oak, wide color range for a small collection area. I need to tag each piece I have with the location where I found it.
