Okay...finally...here's the equipment I use. Feel free to comment. It was all free. this is my saw. A little beat up but it seems to work great. I got it for free from a nice neighbor and all that was missing was the plug...as you can see...I improvised. I got this for free from the same neighbor. This is, I think, a cab maker...it came with a lot of wheels with different grits. I think it's called a gemmaker. Anyone ever hear of one or know how the heck it works? Frankly I'm considering trading it for a tumbler as I just have a single tumbler. Here's another angle. Finally, here's the tumbler my husband built for me out of spare dot matrix printer parts and a motor he had laying around. It works great and, as you can see, there's room for two three pound barrels on it. view from the top. sorry in advance for the photo quality.

nice set up there, Herm, what are you using for barrels on the home made tumbler?? i think you explained once somewhere, but i am too lazy to sift through all the threads.
that looks like some sort of flat lap you got there....Doc or some body will probably know what it is. what did your neighbor say it was?
thanks for letting us peek!

I use the thumler barrels. They work just great and I was familiar with them so that's what I went with when I started. And the neighbor said he thought it was a grinder to make cabs and facets. But I don't know how you could facet on it. It came with a little book...which I haven't had time to read. And I have even plugged the machine in. Bad, eh? You know, life is what happens while you're busy making other plans. I've just never got around to it.

Well you sure got a great deal on the equipment Herm!! The unit you asked about is a rotating flat lap. It looks like some sort of indexing head in the upper right of the bottom photo. The lap has a round "master" lap disc that goes on first and then a round diamond discs (flat lap) that go on it : The discs come in different grit sizes and diameters. The init is also used to form cabs and works quite well!! Another use is to grind, sand and polish small flat slabs. There's a water drip system to keep the diamond from heating up and also to wash away the ground uo material so the diamonds can cut. I have a similar unit and it works great. Tom
