So I have one of Roger Clark's Fairburn Agate books and came across a quote in it that I like from an article entitled "I Am A Rock Hound" by Dr. Richards Hoffman from 1966 that I thought I'd share. Mostly because I agree "My own concept of a rock hound is someone who seeks beauty and peace. He finds both in the stones he hunts, collects and fashions into gems and jewels. He finds beauty in the desert and mountain trails that lead him far from the freeways, from the tumult and the shouting. He finds peace in a golden desert sunrise and in the purple twilight that paints the mountains. He is grateful for the generosity of fellow rock hounds whose time and patience have taught him most of what he knows of the art of the mineral collector, the lapidary and the silversmith. He is thankfully humble that he can learn much from fellow rock hounds regardless of education, economic or social status. He appreciates knowing that his love for his fellow man is not dependent on college educations, Cadillacs or the touch of mink. His satisfaction is great as he reflects on the truth, that many a heart of gold beats to the sound of music beneath a dirty shirt." Yep, that pretty much sums it up for me.

That a really fine quote & reads like rock lyrics to my ears reminds me of the Jonny Cash tune "Sunday Morning Coming Down Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes And found my cleanest dirty shirt…

Awesome and eternal for folks who truly love being a Rockhound. What struck me in particular was his comment.... "a rock hound is someone who seeks beauty and peace." I can personally equate with that emotion when I hold in my hand a stone that is millions of years old and knowing that it will last an eternity. The transcendence of peace at that very moment is beyond words.

When I'm out hounding on the prairies it takes me away from the rest of life's issues and even though everyone may not agree I find the landscape beautiful. And when I find a spectacular Fairburn I know that it has never been seen or held by another. And Never is a long, long time. It's amazing if you really sit down and think about it. I also happen to think he nailed it when he described the rest of it. The generosity of fellow rock hounds. Like the people here on RTH.

It definitely says it all. I really do enjoy the rocks, but the true gems are all the people I have been blessed by on this journey.
