Wow, those are nice..... What kind of light do you use for night hounding? Now the big question- why hounding at night?

Nice ones. I too have lots of tiny agates, both polished and not. Have set some in rings in the past.

Wow, those are nice..... What kind of light do you use for night hounding? Now the big question- why hounding at night? We have a couple of rechargeable headlamps and flashlights. The simple answer of why at night is because I have to go when I can. By the time I get off of work at 1:00 on the weekends, get home and change and drive forty miles it's usually 3 or 3:30 by the time we get out there. And then of course it gets dark around 5 or so. The one benefit to it is that it really makes you become more focused when hunting in a big bed of rocks. We almost got stuck in the mud yesterday it was so sloppy, then we drove back to the highway and walked in at another location. Since we've almost gotten lost out there a time or two in the dark we took one of the flashlights, turned it on and set it on top of my vehicle. We could see it for miles.

I so want to go with you sometime...finding a Fairburn, even a small one is high on my bucket list! Very nice finds there.

Thanks. And come on out! Along with the Fairburns you'll get a ton of wood, all the prairie agates you can carry and bubblegum agates as well. I'd like to venture further north into South Dakota more this summer and hunt Railroad Buttes, Weta, Kadoka and those areas. I've still never found a really big full-faced Fairburn but hope to. I'd also like to hunt for Teepee Canyon agates- that's on my list.

If you ever come south a bit, I could take you to some of my spots as well. I've seen some TeePee Canyon agates...How similar are they to Fairburns? My eye says very similar and the area is close isn't it?

I'm actually from Colorado, I moved here almost 28 years ago though. As far as TeePee Canyon agates go I think they're very similar. It's hard for me to tell the difference, but I'm no expert. I guess you actually have to dig those out which sounds kind of fun! The area is about 2 hours from me. Here's a pretty good link on TeePee Canyon agates: www.mindat.org/loc-27342.htmlHere's another link to The Rock Shed's agates for sale that shows Fairburns, Dryheads and TeePee Canyons. They all look similar to me. therockshed.com/agates.html

Maybe the TeePee Canyon agates have less of the holly leaf shape. I don't know. All are quite beautiful for sure!
