Finished up a batch yesterday, as usual a mix of many different things, about half purchased stones and half locally-collected stones. This post is of the local stones, I'll put up the other pics in a separate thread.
Most of the local stones weren't very successful. They were mainly interesting-looking conglomerates that had washed out of the Rocky mountains. I really liked the look of them, but I guess they weren't cemented solidly enough, so some of the individual grains fell out of many stones, leaving pits and an unimpressive overall appearance. Some turned out okay. The last two pics are of some non-conglomerates that were in the batch, that were much more successful. I take it as a learning experience .. when spring comes I'll be much better at knowing what to bring home and what is leaverite. Anyway, here's a sampling. For the size reference, a Canadian quarter is identical in size to a US quarter.
I think in these first two photos you can see the grain structure that I was hoping to show off. Also, in the second pic there is a piece of green quartz or quartzite, too bad that one didn't take any shine at all.
Some of these turned out a bit better. That big stone on the left is just so neat looking to me that I would have displayed it even if it didn't polish!
These ones were more what I was hoping for, but I think these are some kind of granite or highly metamorphised rock, not conglomerate. Wish I knew my geology/rock identification better.
I'm quite happy with this last stuff. It is some sort of orthoclase/quartz mix I think (again wishing better knowledge). I have talked about this stuff with others here... Puppie I think, plus maybe a few others. Anyway, this is how it turns out for me.
Thanks for looking!
