There is a big rock show in Tucson each year, and 'Redwoodrocks' thinks it would be great, with all the time before the next show, if we could get a bunch of us to meet down there and see the show as representatives of Andy's 'RTH' Brigade. I can't throw all the responsibility on Cal however, I thought it might be a cool idea too. I don't know what the biggest obsticle's would be for some of you, but with almost 8 months to plan, maybe we could all pull together and begin an annual reunion of sorts and meet at some place in Tucson, and in the mean time try to assist those who wouldn't be able to get there very easily. I'd throw some money into a 'Grant Fund' for some one who couldn't afford travel expenses, or maybe sponser someone. What do you think?

I think it is a great idea Banjocreek , I will be there in spirit as it is a wee bit out of my way, but don't mind me , I have plenty here to keep me occupied. I have just entered a piece in the national show in Blenheim New Zealand for september. It all went so fast I can hardly believe I did it . Blenheim is about 550 miles north. There was one rockshow closer to home , but the shingles stopped me going there. I will be there next year though !!!
Good luck with your show

Banjo,
Thanks for posting!
I wanted to go last year's show, but I was traveling too much last year. Not sure what my schedule is for next January, but, if I make a commitment and start planning, I won't let my work schedule get in the way.
My brother lives down in Tucson, and he isn't a rockhound, but even he went to some of the shows. He didn't go to the big show put on by Gem and Rock Society, He said it was too crowded!
Now let's see is there a business reason to go to Tucson??
Not sure if you can share airline miles, but in the last year, I signed up with American and United. If possible, if someone else is close to a frequent flyer free trip and you can share miles, I would share some of my miles.

That is a great idea guys, it sure would be nice to come out for a big rock show and meet some RTH members in person. It would be a long haul for me, but like KD said, a nice break from the deep freeze. Who knows, if airfare is down and I can get the time off, I'd be game no doubt. Later, Don

I have wanted to go to the Tucson show for years. Everybody that has been says it is an incredible experience - and these folks aren't even rockhounds.
Won't really be a problem for me to go - just hitch up the RV and hit the road. In fact, I am praying my brother in law's health will have improved by then and I can find a workcamping job for the winter up in that area.
Banjo, isn't there also a show in February? Or is that in Phoenix?

I too, have always wanted to go to the Tucson show. I hear it is the biggest and bestest rock show ever. Unfortunatly I'm incurring some major expenses this year that I normaly don't have and money may be tight about that time. It already is. Who knows though maybe I might be able to swing it somehow. I love the idea of an annual event/ pilgramig (?) for RTH. Maybe we could even get the boss to go. I know we would all like to meet Andy. If it weren't for him this board would never have been created and none of us would have ever met. So if not this year maybe next year. Great idea Redrocks and Banjo. I think I'll check on travel expenses just to get an idea what I might be looking at. Sort of a feasability study of sorts. I'm a bit confused though, if the show is in January, isn't that about 4 or 5 months away? August 1, Setember 2, October 3, November 4, December 5, January 6. OK maybe 6 months. I'm glad this post didn't come out earlier or I'd be running out of fingers.

As I understand it, the Tucson Rock and Gem Society started the original show 50 years ago. So.... the main event is Tucson Gem & Mineral Society: Feb. 10-13
All the other shows are offsprings of the Tucson Rock and Gem Society show. The subject of the 2005 show is Rocks and Gems of China (or something that had to with rocks, gems and minerals from China). Last year(the 2004) the main subject of the show was GOLD. The society estimated that there was over $80 million in gold on display.
From the website on an earlier post, most of the other shows are open during the same time as the Society show. Some of the other shows appear to end before the Society show.
I am thinking the gathering of the RTH would be around the Society show - February 10-13 (Thursday through Sunday).
Don and KB, some of the folks that I work with who are based in Tucson calls folks from the great white north "snowbirds" for the migration from the frigid north. They had some other less polite names also. One of the names is "QTips", Any guess why?

i'm a snowbirrrrrrrrrd, a.s.s.h......l.e.....ok, i admit it. anybody that stays in this godforsaken part of the country has got to have rocks in their head, and we don't even have any decent rocks! to be truthful, i am about 30 miles west of the Herkimer Diamond Mines, NY's one claim to fame for rock enthusiasts, and NO they ain't diamonds. but if you do a search you will find it. Andy has a new search engine: www.oneoracle.com/Do check it out and let him know how you like it. meanwhile i am going to look at that even and hotels and stuff, we can do this, i think! KD

Jan. and Feb. are the best possible months for me, and my husband to vacation. It's the slowest time of the year. I have to take 2 weeks a year, and it's hard to go in those months cause theres not much to do, so that sounds PERFECT! Would give us time to save some money for it, too. Let me, as Andy would say, chat him up, I think it would be great fun. ;D

Sounds like a cool idea. May I also suggest that anyone who plans to fly to be sure to take an extra suitcase to bring the goodies home in. Oh wait, that may not work since alot of airlines have a weight limit for checked baggage. HHmmm, sounds like a roadtrip to me. Hubby does have the full-size bed 4x4 truck with bed cover. God forbid the precious rocks get wet! ;D

Banjo, I am trying to check flight and hotel info for Tucson and It's telling me that it doesn't show an airport in Tucson. Can this be right? If so where would I be flying in to. Any recomendations on Hotels. Relatively inexpensive but not fleabag. I'd rather drive since I hate to fly but I think I'll be a little pressed for time. Thanks, Bob

This sounds like a great idea! I'll have to do some checking and see what happens as time get closer. We have always wanted to go to Tucson and enjoy the sights! I have been told that if you had a month to see it all, that you still wouldn't be able to catch everything! It is the Granddaddy of all rock shows! We were going last year, until I was laid of of my $50,000.00 a year job ... yea, thanks a lot! It's been a little tight around here since! I'll have to see how things go ... Great idea! Enjoy, John

Bob,
Tucson does have an airport, one of the guys flies up to San Jose every week. I don't think it is a very big airport, so there probably isn't a lot of flights.
Cal.
PS. Qtips are little old ladies with white hair. When driving behind a little old lady - all you can see is their white hair!

Bob, I just noticed in the banner ads - www.onlinehotels.com. There were places for about $50 a night. Not sure if you consider that reasonably priced. Also, I wonder if they jack up the prices when the Rock show is in town. I have heard the rock show is a big draw. Cal
